Principal Product Safety Engineer
Principal Product Safety Engineer
Location Broad Oak, Frimley, New Malden or Filton. Hybrid and flexible working options available—see recruiter for details.
Salary Circa £70,000, dependent on skills and experience.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide expert support to Technical Authority teams in managing hazards, risks, and mitigation strategies.
- Contribute to the development of hazard logs and safety argument maturity.
- Lead product safety strategy and assess safety cases for major subsystems or complex technologies.
- Produce high-quality deliverables, including:
- Hazard logs
- Safety cases
- Safety plans
- Organise and facilitate HAZID (Hazard Identification) meetings, as well as participate in others as needed.
- Collaborate with Technical Authority teams and embedded Safety Engineers to gather safety-related evidence, supporting requirements and acceptance via the Requirements and Acceptance Team.
Skills and Experience
Core Requirements
- Deep knowledge of safety management processes and methodologies.
- Experience across multiple phases of the engineering lifecycle, with strong understanding of:
- Design principles
- Through-life engineering issues
- Awareness of customer defence standards, including:
- DSA-02
- JSP430
- Def Stan 00-56
- MilStn 882E
- BS EN 61508
- Familiarity with principles of a Safety Management System (SMS).
- Proven ability to write technical documentation at an advanced level.

Advantageous Experience
- Specialised expertise in Product Safety within Software Systems.
Professional Qualification
- Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or a related STEM subject.
- Able to self-declare Incorporated or Chartered Engineers status, with support available to achieve this.
- Preference given to candidates already recognised as Chartered Engineers.

About the Product Safety Team
The Combat System sits at the heart of any platform, and the Product Safety team plays a critical role in ensuring these complex systems are designed and assured safely—from concept to disposal. You’ll work both independently and collaboratively with other Product Safety Engineers, acting as a key stakeholder alongside Design Technical Authorities.
Your work will challenge conventions, foster innovation, and deliver safety assurance across a diverse and dynamic portfolio of projects.
