Location: Broad Oak, Frimley, New Malden or Filton. Hybrid and flexible working arrangements available—contact your recruiter for details.
Salary: Circa £70,000, dependent on skills and experience
About the Role
You’ll be a critical driver in ensuring the safety assessment, risk mitigation, and strategy of complex systems, directly contributing to the integrity of cutting-edge combat technologies at BAE Systems.
The Principal Product Safety Engineer will:
- Collaborate with Technical Authority teams to manage hazards, risks, and mitigation strategies
- Develop and mature a hazard log repository with robust, high-quality evidence
- Establish and argue product safety strategies—especially for major subsystems and critical technologies
- Produce technical submissions, including hazard logs, safety cases, and compliance plans
- Lead and facilitate Hazard Identification (HAZID) meetings, with participation in others where required
- Gather and evaluate product safety-related evidence to support safety case acceptance
This role sits within the Product Safety Team, responsible for designing and assuring safety-critical systems—from concept through decommissioning.

Responsibilities

Oversee end-to-end oversight of safety evidence requirements for:
- Design Authorization, Production Authorization, and Service Life Extension
- Challenging “conforming design” as part of the Technical Architect
- Ensuring integrity of quality gate evidence at safety milestones

Drive safety assurance through the engineering lifecycle, from design inception to disposal

Drive product safety metrics and strategies for each mission impact area and cross-program alignment

Support an environment of continuous improvement in product safety, safeguarding technical and IDEA integrity
Requirements

Demonstrated safety management expertise, including:
- Familiarity with standards (DSA-02, JSP430, Def Stan 00-56, Mil-Std 882E, BS EN 61508)
- Satisfactory understanding of Safety Management Systems
- Regional counterpart process awareness

Proven experience in:
- Product safety for software systems (advantageous)
- Technical documentation writing as per contractual and pathological guidelines
- High-impact, complex technical programmes within the defence sector

Qualifications:
- Degree or equivalent in engineering/or related STEM subjects
- Route to Chartered or Incorporated Engineers status (with BAE’s encouragement)

Eligibility Information
BAE Systems operates under security and export controls, affecting:
- Nationality requirements & continuity of UK residency (typically 5–10 years)
- Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) as a minimum
- Some roles require elevated security clearance (e.g., Nationally Confidential or Top Secret).
