Principal Project Engineer - Job Description
Job Overview
The Principal Project Engineer is responsible for interpreting internal or external business issues and recommending best practices. This role involves solving complex engineering-related problems, working independently, and providing leadership over teams and projects. As a specialist in project engineering, the successful Principal Project Engineer must have:
- In-depth expertise in project engineering
- Broad knowledge of project engineering within wider engineering functions
Responsibilities
Key tasks and responsibilities include:
- Manage the engineering scope of a McDermott project
- Establish and implement project procedures to ensure deliverables meet quality and technical requirements in line with contract documents
- Oversee technical execution, aligning it with established business considerations
- Lead (or assist in leading) units, functional areas, or assume the role of Project Engineering Manager (PEM), depending on project size and complexity
Proposal & Technical Leadership
- Prepare and support proposals for prospective projects
- Assumed responsibility as the Project Engineering Manager (PEM) for smaller to medium-size EPC projects
- Promote and embed Safety in designs and processes
- Understanding and coordinating engineering requirements within contract documentation
Project Execution & Documentation
- Develop and implement a Project Execution Plan
- Integrate Multi-Office Execution (MOPEX) as appropriate -create internal/external Division of Responsibility (DOR) matrices
- Prepare a Project Coordination Procedure
- Communicate project requirements to internal engineering teams
Coordination & Guidance
- Supervise and provide mentorship to Project Engineers
- Facilitate effective communication among engineering disciplines
- Document design discussions and decisions
- Prepare, review, and approve:
- Meeting minutes
- Technical Queries and Design Deviations
- Responses to RFI (Requests for Information) and other correspondence
- Weekly and monthly management reports

Management & Oversight
- Ensure cost, schedule, quantity, and budget control
- Manage changes proactively
- Lead the development and maintenance of:
- Project engineering documents
- Engineering Staffing Plan
- Equipment Lists
- Potential Change Notices
Handover & Closeout
- Assist in orderly project handover and archiving
- Approve and submit closeout reports
- Review and approve Lessons Learned for projects
Reports To
- Project: Project Engineering Manager, Project Manager
- Functionally: Manager of Project Engineering / Engineering Director
Liaises With
- Project Engineers, PEM, PMs, Discipline Lead Engineers
- Engineering department managers
- Construction/Fabrication teams
- Project Controls & Finance
Supervises
- Project Engineers
- Engineering Discipline Leads (if assigned as PEM)
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Qualifications & Education
- A Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering
- 2-4 years of experience as a Project Engineering Manager on a relevant project
- 5–10 years of project engineering experience
- Demonstrated expertise in a specialized project engineering discipline
- Experience with international projects
- MOPEX (multi-office execution) project experience
- Joint venture or consortium group project experience
- Experience in proposal development and contractual documentation
- Working knowledge of revamping (Brownfield) and grassroots (Greenfield) projects

Technical & Operational Requirements
- In-depth understanding of design engineering codes and standards
- Familiarity with detailed engineering and design processes
- Ability to read and interpret contractual documentation effectively
- Strong stakeholder communication skills
- Experience solving complex problems and innovating solutions
- Ability to work independently or with limited guidance
- Proven ability to lead functional teams and projects

Preferred Qualifications
- Registered Engineer in Training (ElT) or member of a professional engineering society
