Job Description

Working on a major nuclear power plant project, the Principal Project Manager will be a mechanical engineering biased candidate responsible for overseeing the design of a building that houses an auxiliary boiler system, which provides steam to the main turbines of two reactors of the power plant.

The Principal Project Manager shall act as Responsible Designer for this contract responsible for:

  • Supporting the development of engineering delivery strategies;
  • Ensuring effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Managing the authoring of Scope of Works documentation for Contract Partner(s);
  • Managing the preparation and development of the Technical Specifications for the design studies;
  • Coordinating the technical assessment of contracts prior to signature of contract;
  • Providing technical management of the Contract(s), including being the primary point of contact for the civil programme Project Managers and Mechanical, Electrical and Heating and Ventilation (MEH) programme Project Managers.
  • Coordinate engineering design activities performed by the different Contract Partners in parallel work streams;
  • Providing technical support and information to the Contract Partner(s) where required;
  • Managing the surveillance of the Contract Partner(s) detailed design work, in conjunction with technical management, in accordance with project processes.
  • Ensuring consistency of Contract Partner(s) deliverables with the contract technical specifications and ensuring Safety and UK Context requirements are taken into account in design activities;
  • Ensuring effective configuration control process are in place and are implemented;
  • Leading the resolution of transverse (multi-programme) engineering issues or risks;
  • Ensuring that the Contract Partner(s) schedules and milestones are consistent with global schedule.
  • Ensuring that the Contract Partner(s) List of Deliverables (LoD) are consistent with the agreed schedule(s) and to ensure the Contract Partner is delivering design output in accordance with the agreed schedule and the LoD.
  • Agree and accept the Contract Partner Design Schedule;
  • Provide and coordinate engineering design gateway requirements and reviews;
  • Coordinate Constructability Reviews prior to the Readiness Review and formal transfer to the Joint Delivery Office (JDO) team;
  • Manage the coordinate and consolidate comments provided by all the Stakeholders during the deliverables review process;
  • Facilitate optimisation of the design via modifications, trends and changes from feedback across the project;
  • Lead discussions with the Contract Partner, providing support to the NNB Project Manager with early warning and compensation events, reviewing project change requests and provide support to the commercial lead for cost and schedule impact assessment and negotiation;
  • Ensure perceived risks and trends are recorded and appropriately managed;
  • Ensure effective tracking, mitigation and closure of open points;

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Experience in design management and coordination on large multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
  • Strong engineering experience with boilers, steam generation facilities, or thermal process.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building design and construction.
  • Excellent knowledge of engineering procedures especially RIBA plan of work 2020, or equivalent.
  • Experienced in buildings standards and engineering procedures in the UK.
  • Accuracy, tenacity, diplomacy, results-oriented, leadership.
  • Acknowledged organisational skills including the ability to delegate.
  • Ability to work independently and be proactive.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Strong IT skills and proficiency in engineering software packages.

  • Chartered Engineer.
  • French language skills.
  • Experience in nuclear industry appreciated. Awareness of the nuclear safety related constraints.
