Our Ecosystems and Threatened Species (EaTS) branch is currently seeking to appoint a Principal Project Officer to lead the delivery of high-impact programs and projects that support NSW's climate change, sustainability, environmental and conservation objectives.
As a Principal Project Officer, you will play a key leadership role in the planning, development and delivery of complex projects and policy initiatives across the Biodiversity and Conservation division. Working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment, you will oversee project outcomes from inception through to implementation, manage project resources, budgets and reporting requirements, and provide strategic advice on complex and often sensitive issues. You will build strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, influence decision-making, and lead a small team to deliver meaningful outcomes that support communities, the environment and future generations across NSW.
The role will lead and manage a team responsible for the planning and delivery of threatened species and biodiversity projects. In addition, the position will support the broader Hunter Central Coast EaTS team by strengthening project management capacity, improving systems and procedures, and providing mentoring and guidance to casual and junior staff.
The role reports to the Senior Team Leader to provide overall coordination and oversight to the teams’ activities and other branch, divisional or strategic processes.
About You

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
