Principal Property Litigation Lawyer
Principal Property Litigation Lawyer – Join Our Legal Team
We’re delighted to invite a Principal Property Litigation Lawyer to join our Legal team, ensuring continuity and growth as we preserve and maintain our canals.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
You’ll lead and manage property-related disputes across the Trust’s operational and investment property portfolio, providing key expertise to support strategic decision-making.
Key Accountabilities:

Conduct and manage property law disputes including:
- Title, trespass, boundary disputes
- Rights and easements
- Restrictive covenants
- Rights of support
- Claims for nuisance Handling conflicts with adjoining landowners, tenants, and stakeholders.

Collaborate with Senior Lawyers to provide strategic litigation risk advice to Senior Management and the Executive, aligning with the Trust’s estrates asset management strategy.

Lead high-value disputes (as claimant and defendant) involving:
- Retaining walls & embankments
- Bridges, harbours & flood defences
- Water resources and highways Part of infrastructure liability cases against public and third-sector owners.

Supervise the Property Litigation Lawyer and Paralegal, coordinating with the Trust Claims Manager and external counsel.

Work with the Senior Litigation Lawyer on boating and mooring disputes.
Working Hours & Location
- 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
- Remote working basis with attendance at Trust hubs as required.
About You
We’re seeking a qualified solicitor (or equivalent) with:
- At least 10 years’ experience in property litigation law, either in private practice or in-house.
- Strong case management of high-value property litigation with minimal oversight.
- Skill in strategic legal risk consultation at a senior level.
- Ability to supervise legal teams, including counsel, and coordinate deliverables.
- Experience building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Commitment to following the Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy, including incident reporting and risk assessment.
- Compliance with PPE, plant, and task-specific safety standards.
