Principal Psychologist

Principal Psychologist – Integrated Mental Health Team at HMP Fosse Way

About The Role

  • MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO EVERY LIFE

We are seeking a Principal Psychologist to join our integrated Mental Health teams working at HMP Fosse Way, a category-C prison in Glen Parva, Leicestershire. This facility houses patients with a variety of complex and acute mental health needs.

You will:

  • Mentor and support a Clinical Psychologist and an Assistant Psychologist
  • Develop and oversee psychological services in a prison healthcare setting
  • Bring clinical excellence and leadership experience to our trauma-informed workforce

Hours & Salary

  • Location: HMP Fosse Way, Glen Parva, Leicester
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00 or 08:30–16:30
  • Contract: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Salary: Up to £75,000/year (depending on experience)

Your Responsibilities

As the Principal Psychologist, you will:

  • Service Development:

    • Lead the adoption of a trauma-informed mental health service model across sites
    • Contribute to refining Psychological Services in a dynamic prison environment
  • Clinical Oversight:

    • Provide supervision, mentoring, and support to the Integrated Mental Health Team (IMHT)
    • Ensure consistency in psychological assessments and intervention approaches
  • Complex Care:

    • Conduct specialist psychological assessments
    • Facilitate multi-disciplinary formulations in complex cases
    • Offer psychological interventions to highly specialised patient groups
  • Trauma-Informed Interventions:

    • Deliver and supervise 1:1 and group sessions under the ‘Making Sense’ Programme
    • Implement evidence-based approaches tailored to prison setting
  • Training & Research:

    • Teach and train prison healthcare & custody staff where needed
    • Drive audit, service evaluation, and research projects

Must-haves (must be fully IVA-clear for this post):

  • Registered with a professional body (HCPC or BPS)
  • Senior-level experience as a qualified Clinical/Counselling Psychologist
  • Proven expertise in specialist psychological assessments and treatment across care settings, including:
    • Primary, secondary/specialist, inpatient/residential, and forensicisations
  • Strong leadership track record in trauma-informed spaces
