About the Role
An exciting role has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Principal Psychologist to join our Safer Connections Service. Our newly configured service supports children and young people (aged 7 to 17), part of Birmingham Children’s Trust, who present with harmful sexual behaviour. The team adopts a multi-agency approach, collaborating with Early Help, Safeguarding, Children in Care, and Youth Justice Services. We deliver bespoke and tailored interventions, education, and support programmes.
We are seeking a Principal Psychologist with:
- Significant clinical leadership experience
- Expertise in service development
- A trauma-informed, systemic, and developmentally sensitive approach
This position will work closely with the Operational Team Manager to provide clinical leadership, ensuring our service aligns with the evidence base and adheres to current best practice guidance.
Core Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Supporting the development and delivery of the service using innovative, psychologically informed, evidence-based practices.
- Conducting routine service evaluations and contributing to clinical research where applicable.
- Leading risk screening and management planning, escalating mental health concerns, and fostering effective inter-agency partnerships.
- Providing psychological consultation, shared formulations of complex presentations, and developing safety plans.
- Delivering training, clinical supervision, education, and interventions for children, young people, families, and caregivers.
- Undertaking specialist assessments and psychological interventions tailored to individual needs.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
While experience in harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) interventions is beneficial, we welcome applications from psychologists across specialties with:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
