Principal Public Health Specialist

Role: Civil Service Grade 9

  • Salary: £60,144 - £63,535
  • Hours: 37 per week (flexible work style, 2-3 days in a council location, rest working from home)
  • Contract: Full-time, permanent
  • Closing Date: 20th July 2026
  • Interview Week: Commencing 10th August 2026

About the Role

The City of Wolverhampton Council is seeking an experienced, motivated Principal Public Health Specialist to lead and deliver the children and young people’s public health portfolio.

This is a high-impact, collaborative role, enabling the successful candidate to drive improvements in health outcomes and reduce inequalities across Wolverhampton. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the Head of Service Public Health, Deputy Director of Public Health, and the Director of Public Health.
  • Commissioning and delivering evidence-based public health initiatives and policies.
  • Working across diverse sectors, including education, health, voluntary, and local government partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Public Health Specialists to deliver a wide range of priority areas, including:

    • Maternal and infant health
    • Healthy Child Programme
    • Obesity
    • Emotional and mental wellbeing
    • Oral health
  • Operate flexibly within a matrix structure, supporting broader departmental priorities.

  • Spearhead system-wide public health initiatives while maintaining alignment with policy and practice.

  • Translate complex information into clear strategies for internal/external stakeholders.


Requirements & Experience

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Substantial public health experience, including knowledge of UK policy and practice.
  • Programme/project management skills to coordinate initiatives effectively.
  • Strong ability in collaborative partnership working, both internally and externally.
  • Proven track record in analysing data and shaping public health policies.
  • Exceptional communication skills to engage stakeholders at all levels.
