Band 8A Principal Radioisotope and Imaging Physicist

Location: Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, Sutton, Surrey Department: Radioisotope Physics Group, Nuclear Medicine

Applications are invited for a Band 8A Principal Radioisotope and Imaging Physicist within the Radioisotope Physics group at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (NHSFT). The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of clinical scientists supporting nuclear medicine imaging, molecular radiotherapy, and radiation safety across our two hospitals: Sutton (Surrey) and Chelsea (London).


About the Role

The Nuclear Medicine Department performs over 18,000 imaging procedures annually, distributing services across sites:

Sutton Site (Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton)

  • Siemens Biograph VisionX PET/CT
  • Siemens Biograph mCT (due for upgrade to Siemens Quadra LAFOV PET/CT)
  • Two Siemens Intevo SPECT/CT systems

Chelsea Site (Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea)

  • Siemens Intevo SPECT/CT
  • Siemens Biograph Horizon PET/CT

The successful candidate will take a leading role in supporting and optimising the new LAFOV PET service at Sutton, in addition to providing broad radioisotope physics support across both sites.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Physics Expertise (Clinical Support)

  • Act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) across all nuclear medicine imaging and therapy disciplines.
  • Provide day-to-day physics support services for the department.

Scientific Development & Safeguarding Quality

  • Lead scientific development of PET-CT imaging services at both Sutton and Chelsea.
  • Ensure all departmental activities comply with quality frameworks, including auditing practices and compliance.
  • Contribute to ongoing research initiatives and service improvements in nuclear medicine physics.

Requirements

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant scientific or medical physics discipline.
  • Registration with the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Medical Physics Expert (MPE) Certificate of Competence (RPA 2000).
