Job Summary

This is an opportunity to join a team of highly experienced engineers. You will be educated to B.Sc. degree level or equivalent in electronics and electrical engineering, with minimum 10 years of experience in the field of radiotherapy, working with linacs.

Linacs incorporate high voltage systems, high vacuum systems, high power RF systems and circuits, cooling systems, microcontroller based systems, pressurised gas systems and complex mechanical systems; and you will be expected to work in any of these areas. This creates a dynamic working environment with multiple daily challenges and opportunities to learn. The department boasts fully equipped electronics and mechanical workshops to enable on site repairs.

The Radiation Physics Department provides a full range of complex radiotherapy scientific and technical services at Charing Cross (CHX) and Hammersmith hospitals (HH). The CHX site equipment currently includes 3 Varian TB linacs, 1 Accuray Radiaxct, with a 2nd Radiaxct currently being installed, a Siemens CT unit and an X-Strahl kV unit. There is an additional Varian TB and a Flexitron HDR brachytherapy unit at the HH.

Suitable applicants with less experience may be considered for appointment at a lower band.

  • Prioritise work in accordance with the Department/Section's procedures and competing service demands. Propose changes to working practices and procedures within the Electronics Section.
  • Assist other groups within the Department in the development and construction of new and novel devices to support clinical activity and research.
  • Carry out all duties in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, relevant Statutory Regulations, Approved Codes of Conduct and Local Rules. Report to the section Manager any potential breaches.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
