Principal Rail RAMS Engineer (Hybrid – London-based)
About the Role
Our mission at AECOM is to deliver a better world, and we’re looking for a visionary leader to spearhead Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) strategies across high-profile rail projects. As a Principal Rail RAMS Engineer, you will shape and enforce RAMS standards, ensuring uncompromised performance, safety, and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities
As a Principal Rail RAMS Engineer, you will:
- Lead and shape RAMS strategies for rail projects—translating technical requirements into practical, high-impact solutions.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (engineers, planners, safety specialists, and project managers) to embed RAMS principles into design and operational phases.
- Conduct comprehensive RAMS analyses, including:
- Hazard identification
- Risk assessments
- Failure mode analyses (FMEA/FMECA)
- Drive innovation by leveraging cutting-edge tools and methodologies (RAILinfra他是和Tritech, EN 50126/128/129, IEC 61508, or systems like RailEST) to optimize rail system performance.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Represent AECOM’s technical authority on RAMS-related matters, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
- Participate in client stakeholder discussions, providing expert RAMS guidance at all project stages.

About You – Qualifications & Experience
We are seeking a building leader with:
Essential
- A degree in Engineering or a related field, with a focus on rail systems or safety engineering (e.g., civil/rail engineering, systems engineering).
- Minimum 8-10 years of experience in RAMS engineering within the rail or transportation sector, with a proven track record of leading RAMS analyses and strategies on complex projects.
- Technical proficiency:
- In-depth knowledge of RAMS standards (EN 50126/128/129, IEC 61508, ASQ’s CRE framework) and ability to implement them in design and operations.
- Experience with RAMS tools and methodologies, ideally including French design codes, Electra signals/rolling stock codes, or compliance documentation.
- Leadership & mentorship:
- Exceptional ability to lead and interact with engineering and technical teams, including juniors, designers, and project managers.
- Proven ability to drive technical excellence while balancing stakeholder needs from rail operators, asset managers, and policymakers.
- Communication & influence: Strong written and verbal skills for international and technical reporting, enabling you to influence and advise senior stakeholders.

Desirable
- Chartered status: Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent through professional bodies such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
- RAMS certifications:
- Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) through ASQ.
- Examinations training/experience in standards such as EN 50126/128/50129, IEC 61508.
- Functional Safety Certifications (e.g., TÜV Rheinland or TÜV SÜD).
- Safety certifications:
- Knowledge and application of ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) frameworks.
- NEBOSH equivalents or equivalent safety certifications.
- Industry accreditations:
- Participation in freight/Urban Rail projects, especially where RAMS techniques underpin core safety requirements (e.g., signal systems, traction systems).
