Principal Safety Engineer – Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives Specialist

Location: Various Sites (Devonport, Bristol, Rosyth) + Hybrid Working Compensation: Competitive + Benefits Role Type: Full-time / Permanent Reference: SF72435

This is an exciting opportunity to influence the design and safety assurance of ships that protect national security, while growing your expertise across defence, aerospace and engineering.


Core Responsibilities

As a Principal Safety Engineer – Weomes, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives Specialist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leadership: Directing the safe introduction, integration and operation of weapons, ordnance, munitions and explosive systems across naval shipbuilding programmes.
  • Technical authority: Making critical decisions shaping equipment safety, compliance with UK legislation and MoD policy, and ensuring environmental and operational excellence.
  • Stakeholder coordination: Serving as a key technical authority in multi-disciplinary teams, chairing key meetings (e.g., PSECs, HLWGs, EWGs) and collaborating with engineering, naval architecture and project delivery teams.
  • Regulatory and technical outputs:
    • Developing and approving technical safety documents (SEMPs, SETHA Reports, Safety Case Documents, Hazard Logs, Ammunition Route Plans, and integration specifications).
    • Managing Ship Explosives Threat Hazard Assessment (SETHA), aligning with Maritime Acquisition Publication (MAP) 01-103.
    • Ensuring WOME (Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives) safety across embarkation, storage, handling and operational use.
  • Technical problem-solving: Providing problem-solving accountability on weapon system design development and safety engineering challenges.

Essential Criteria & Experience

  • Technical expertise: Accountability for design development and problem-solving in WOME, with clear knowledge and deep experience in explosive safety.
  • Naval programme experience:
    • Relevant exposure to navy programmes and exposure to standards: ANEP 77, NATG Explosive Certification, DS 00-101, NAN Exp 03 Part 1 and 2, Defence Maritime and Ordnance Regulations.
    • Familiarity with the IMO IMDG Code.
  • Working knowledge of WESCoE accreditation procedures and adherence to naval explosive safety procedures.
  • Project management: Leading SETHA activities, compliance reviews and assessing hazard log and technical documentation.
  • Experience delivering pivotal, multi-disciplinary inputs for incumbent defence & aerospace survivability programmes.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status in an engineering discipline.
  • Degree-qualified with an engineering degree (or HND/HNC with extensive and relevant engineering experience).
  • Suitably qualified in relevant explosive and maritime safety training (e.g., IMO Training Course) or comparable programmes.
