About the Role
At Rolls-Royce, we shape the modern world through cutting-edge solutions, supported by a culture that champions innovation and individuality. As a Principal Software Engineer, you’ll be part of the Software Systems Capability function, responsible for the design, validation, testing, and on-time delivery of software components—ensuring they meet high-level requirements and system integrity standards.
Your role involves specifying, refining, and decomposing software designs, translating requirements into testable components, analysing functional behaviour (including modelling and simulation), and driving improvements in robustness and safety. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally while fostering a high-performance environment that values continuous learning and problem-solving.

This role requires a balance of technical leadership, quality assurance, and stakeholder collaboration. Your duties will include:
Software Development & Design
- Review and agree high-level software requirements, ensuring testability.
- Analyse and translate requirements into validated designs for software components.
- Define and capture constrained requirements (non-negotiable) and quality attributes (tradeable).
- Design and implement software components to meet requirements and standards.
- Allocate software requirements to test vehicles per the verification plan.
Verification & Quality Assurance
- Model and simulate software components to ensure compliance with requirements.
- Develop, review, and execute software tests to evidence requirement fulfilment.
- Analyse existing software for architectural/design flaws and lead codebase improvements.
- Evaluate verification test results against software artefact compliance.
- Conduct targeted software testing to diagnose issues, resolve problems, and support customer relations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
