Job Description
Turnitin is seeking a Principal Backend Engineer with expertise in Java-based backend development, serverless architectures, and hands-on experience with frontend technologies. This role requires passion for building scalable distributed systems, optimizing data structures, and ensuring high-performing, resilient applications for our educational platforms.
You will serve in a core contributor role on our shared services team, where substantial hands-on development is required—front-end contributions, technical leadership, and day-to-day problem-solving are essential. The position also involves coaching junior engineers and supporting other multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead and architect backend services using Java and serverless approaches (e.g., AWS Lambda, Azure Functions).
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems for high-performance, distributed applications.
- Provide technical leadership to ensure alignment with best practices and architectural standards.
- Collaborate with frontend teams when required, supporting seamless API integrations.
- Optimize and scale existing services, improving performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Partner with product managers, architects, and technical leads to deliver scalable and impactful solutions.
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
- Oversee CI/CD pipelines, ensuring streamlined and reliable deployment workflows.
- Enforce software quality standards by conducting peer reviews, testing (TDD/BDD), and architectural audits.
- Develop comprehensive documentation for shared components, including usage guides and technical diagrams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
