Principal Software Engineer

As our Principal Software Engineer, you will take a senior leadership role within the Digital Services Directorate, responsible for architecting, developing, integrating, and supporting the digital systems critical to our EPR rollout and wider organisational strategy.

In This Role, You Will

  • Lead and mentor a team of highly skilled developers and integration specialists.
  • Oversee development of high‑quality, resilient, secure software and data integrations supporting clinical safety and operational efficiency.
  • Act as technical authority across backend systems, interfaces, data architecture and code quality, providing expert leadership to development teams.
  • Work with clinical and non‑clinical colleagues to ensure EPR data is accurate, validated, trusted and available for real‑time and strategic clinical needs.
  • Champion Agile methodologies, serving as Scrum Master and driving continuous improvement.
  • Drive interface development using HL7, FHIR, RESTful APIs, SOAP, and modern standards across multiple Trust systems.
  • Advise senior management, digital leaders and clinical stakeholders on technical strategy, data usage, integration approaches and system enhancements.

This is a senior, highly influential role where you will shape the Group’s approach to clinical system integration, resilience, and integration standards. Your work will be used by thousands of clinical and operational users and will directly support safer, faster and more informed patient care.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
