Principal Software Engineer
Principal Engineer / Technical Lead Cambridge | Hybrid (2 days per week) | £65,000 - £90,000 + Bonus + Excellent Benefits
We're exclusively partnering with a globally recognised technology organisation undergoing a significant engineering transformation. As they continue to invest in modern software delivery, cloud technologies and AI-enabled engineering practices, they're looking to appoint a Principal Engineer / Technical Lead to help shape the future of their digital platforms.
This is an opportunity to join a collaborative engineering environment where you'll influence technical direction, mentor development teams and help deliver products used by millions of users worldwide.
The Opportunity This is not a traditional architecture role.
We're looking for an experienced software engineering leader who enjoys staying close to technology while driving technical direction across a major product area.
You'll act as the bridge between Product, UX and Engineering, translating business objectives into scalable, maintainable software while helping engineering teams deliver with confidence.
You'll have the freedom to remain hands-on where it adds value - reviewing code, solving complex technical challenges and helping engineers overcome blockers - while influencing architecture, engineering standards and delivery strategy.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
