Job Title: Principal Solar Electrical Engineer

Location

  • Based in any of our offices across Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, London, or Perth
  • Hybrid working model

Role Overview

Join our growing Energy team for a dynamic opportunity to work on a diverse range of solar projects. From utility-scale to distributed generation, your designs will maximise efficiency to help clients meet their clean energy goals.

As a Principal Solar Electrical Engineer, you will:

  • Lead project teams to deliver feasibility, design, and technical advisory services.
  • Work on UK Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) and projects across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).
  • Collaborate on projects incorporating floating, ground-mounted, rooftop, and carport renewable energy systems, including those paired with battery energy storage systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • System Design & Analysis
    • Design solar PV systems using industry-standard software such as PVSol, PVSyst, PVCase.
    • Prepare design layouts, system specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.

  • Site Survey & Delivery

    • Conduct technical site surveys across the UK.
    • Collaborate on client-facing deliverables, including presentations and technical submissions, alongside commercial teams.
  • Technical Leadership

    • Lead project teams and mentor junior engineers.
    • Uphold ethical and safety best practices across all project stages.
    • Ensure compliance with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations and the IET Code of Practice for Solar PV Installations.
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Represent AECOM in client meetings, developing strong professional relationships.
    • Advise on technical solutions to meet project objectives.

Requirements

Education & Qualification

  • Degree or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or actively working towards it) through a relevant professional institution.

Technical & Professional Standards

  • Proven experience in design, specification, and/or construction of solar PV projects in a consultancy, EPC contractor, or developer environment.
  • Expert knowledge of solar PV systems, electrical infrastructure, and project economics.
  • Skilled in composing high-quality technical reports, specifications, and client documentation.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and best practices for solar PV installations.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and mentoring professionals.

Role-Specific Criteria

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel (including remote/solar sites).
  • Proven customer-centric relationship management ability.
  • Strong attention to detail and proactive approach to project delivery.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
