The Role: Principal Solar Electrical Engineer

Location: Hybrid model (can be based in Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, London, or Perth) Business Group: DCS | Strategic Business Unit: Europe & India

AECOM’s Energy team is expanding globally, delivering utility-scale and distributed solar solutions—from feasibility studies to full project delivery. As a Principal Solar Electrical Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in:

  • Innovative projects: Designing and advising on rooftop, carport, floating, and ground-mounted solar PV systems (including UK’s largest Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects) across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Clean energy leadership: Supporting clients to achieve ** Net Zero goals** through technically robust designs aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Technical excellence: Upholding BS 7671 and IET Code of Practice for solar PV, ensuring net-zero targets and regulatory compliance.

Your Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Solar Electrical Engineer, you will:

Core Technical Work

  • Design, specify, and deliver solar PV systems using PVSol, PVSyst, and PVCase, with support from AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical CAD tools.
  • Develop technical reports, design layouts, cost estimates, and tender documentation for international projects.
  • Conduct site surveys—evaluating feasibility, environment, and grid connectivity—and mitigate risks.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to patent and construct solutions for projects incorporating battery energy storage systems.

Client & Team Leadership

  • Engage with clients to define technical requirements, shape proposals, and present designs confidently.
  • Mentor junior engineers, offering technical guidance and project leadership.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, from permitting to post-construction audits, across EMEA and UK markets.

Strategic Contributions

  • Influences innovative designs that optimise efficiency, reduce costs, and minimise environmental impact.
  • Keeps tabs on emerging electrical standards, decarbonisation codes, and solar sector trends.
  • Supports commercial teams in technical risk assessments to match project objectives.

Who We’re Looking For

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related disciplines.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or active pursuit of chartership) with a UK professional institution (e.g., IET, CIBSE).

Technical Experience & Expertise

  • 5+ years of proven experience in consultancy, EPC contracting, or development environment, specialising in solar PV.
  • Hands-on experience with grid-tied and off-grid system design, understanding of:
    • Solar technologies (PV modules, inverters, trackers, ESS).
    • Electrical infrastructure and connection protocols.
  • Portfolio demonstrating design modifications for large-scale and custom projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK/IET standards, permitting processes, and Net Zero strategies.

Soft Skills & Leadership

  • Ability to manage projects independently and guide high-performing teams under tight deadlines.
  • Strong client-facing skills with a focus on collaborative solutions and conflict resolution.
  • Detail orientation: Demonstrated in managing reports, contracts, and statutory documentation.
  • Communication: Excellent written/verbal skills, offering clarity in both executive and technical audiences.

Business Essentials

  • Full UK driving licence with willingness to travel to remote sites (intermittent travel).
  • Discretion and professionalism during site assessments, including confidential project data.
