Principal Stroke Psychologist/Neuropsychologist

Job Overview

This is the ideal post for an enthusiastic and inventive Psychologist who is interested in working with individuals and families post stroke. The role involves supervising a newly qualified psychologist and being part of a leadership team within MDT team of dedicated professionals working in stroke care. The service started in 2013 and was an innovative partnership with the Community MDT Stroke Services and Commissioners. The service has grown in this time and there are posts covering Early Supported Discharge Team, the community rehabilitation ward and vocational rehabilitation.

This growth and development is something which is a core part of the service and it is the close relationships we hold with community teams and partners which make this possible. The service provides one-to-one and group interventions for individuals who have experienced stroke and their families; collaborative work with our MDT teams in joint sessions; consultation and training. The service offers different modalities for intervention; face-to-face on the ward, outpatient sessions, home visits, video and telephone. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring high quality care is delivered in a timely manner in line with client needs, our wider services and national guidance.

Main duties of the job

This service lead role will offer the post holder the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills working as part of the senior leadership team in West Essex Stroke. Other key roles will be in supervision of qualified, training and non-qualified staff, service development with MDT stroke leads and wider initiatives in the Clinical Psychology Service. Neuropsychological skills are fundamental to this post. The post holder will be skilled in neuropsychological assessment but a working knowledge of the application of neuropsychological formulation in rehabilitation approaches is essential.

Within the Clinical Health Services, across Essex, there are three other service leads in: Stroke (Mid and South), Mental Health Liaison (Essex wide) and Breathlessness (Mid and South) services for peer support. Within the Clinical Health Psychology Services, there are a range of therapeutic interests; narrative therapy, systemic approaches, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy. Neuropsychology peer relationships will be supported through Clinical Health and Older Adults Psychology Services.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
