Role Description
The Principal Structural Engineer is a full-time, hybrid role based in the City of Bristol, with a balance of office-based work and some work-from-home flexibility. The role involves leading and delivering structural design projects, undertaking complex structural analysis and calculations, and overseeing the design of sub- and super-structures for a variety of building types and materials.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Managing project teams
- Coordinating with civil engineering and CAD resources
- Reviewing and approving design outputs
- Ensuring compliance with relevant standards and building regulations
The Principal Structural Engineer will liaise with clients, architects, contractors, and other stakeholders, contribute to feasibility studies and technical reports, and provide technical leadership during site inspections and construction monitoring. The role also includes:
- Mentoring junior engineers
- Supporting BIM integration
- Promoting best practices in safety, sustainability, and quality
Qualifications
- Strong structural engineering expertise, including Structural Engineering and Structural Analysis skills applied to a variety of building types and materials.
- Proficiency in technical calculations, with the ability to perform and review complex design Calculations to relevant codes and standards.
- Experience in Civil Engineering design, including drainage, external works, and integration with structural solutions.
- Competence in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools and familiarity with BIM workflows for producing and coordinating engineering drawings and models.
- Relevant engineering degree (e.g., civil or structural engineering) and chartered or near-chartered status with a recognized professional body (such as ICE or IStructE).
- Proven experience in leading projects, managing stakeholders, and delivering designs from concept through to construction on small and large developments.
- Strong communication, report-writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to mentor and guide junior team members, work collaboratively in a compact team, and adapt to hybrid working arrangements.
- Sound understanding of UK building regulations, relevant industry standards, and best practices in safety.
