Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Principal Sustainability Consultant to grow our infrastructure decarbonisation and sustainability advisory services within the Environment and Energy Business Unit. This flexible hybrid role may be based in Bristol or Leeds, supporting a global team of sustainability leaders.
Key Responsibilities

Strategic Growth & Market Development Collaborate with business leadership to:
- Identify emerging decarbonisation and sustainability market opportunities.
- Develop a low-carbon project pipeline aligned with strategic business objectives.
- Lead bids, tenders, and proposals to secure impactful projects.

Client Advisory & Net Zero Leadership Provide strategic technical guidance to clients to:
- Decarbonise infrastructure projects across power, transportation, and water sectors.
- Navigate UK/EU regulatory frameworks and net zero commitments.
- Integrate GHG reporting methodologies (GHG Protocol, PAS 2080, ISO 14000+).

The Team
You’ll join a cohort of 50+ carbon and ESG specialists delivering advisory and implementation services across high-profile climate projects. Our team partners with:
- Major transportation operators
- Renewable energy developers
- Energy network providers
- Water utilities
Collaborate with colleagues globally, growing AECOM’s expertise in sustainable innovation.
About You
Come armed with technical mastery, commercial acumen, and a passion for seeing bold ideas transform into tangible solutions.
Technical Expertise (Must-Have)
- Greenhouse Gas Leadership
- Technical lead for GHG assessments and emission inventory projects.
- Deep knowledge of GHG Protocol, PAS 2080, and ISO 14000 standards.
- Public Policy & Compliance
- UK/EU regulatory experience in decarbonisation and emissions reporting.
- Familiarity with EIA processes and green finance frameworks.
- Infraorphism
- Sector-agnostic expertise in low-carbon strategies for power, transport, and water systems.
Specialisation in Broad Sustainability
- Carbon Mitigation & Design
- Proven track record developing net zero transition plans, carbon models, and sustainable design solutions.
- Project Delivery
- Financial and commercial acumen across proposal management, bid support, and client partnerships.
Leadership & Growth Mindset
- Stakeholder Communication
- Technical storytelling to executives, regulatory bodies, and infrastructure clients.
- Team & Business Development
- Mentoring future sustainability leaders across multidisciplinary delivery teams.

Substitute Experience (In Desirable)
- Consultancy experience within renewable energy, transportation, carbon capture, or water sectors.
- Science-based target (SBTi) consulting and pathway modelling.
- Contributions to real-world decarbonisation case studies.
