About the Role
Ultra’s Systems Engineering function drives all projects throughout the bid and development lifecycle, ensuring compliance with requirements, improving systems engineering efficacy, and optimising design-to-cost and design-for-manufacture.
This experienced senior role operates with autonomy, influencing technical decisions, escalating challenges, and mentoring peers. You’ll partner with engineering teams, lead IV&V (Verification & Validation), and support projects from concept to delivery.
Core Responsibilities
| - Ensure in-process IV&V for Hardware/SW/Firmware solutions via effective systems integration & verification processes.
- Create and maintain IV&V artefacts: Strategies, Plans, Procedures, Compliance Matrices, Reports—driving internal/external acceptance.
- Champion safety/security of IV&V events and facilities per government regulations.
- Lead cross-discipline test equipment/rig development—from requirements to deployment, integrating bespoke tools into test workflows.
- Stakeholder engagement at reviews (TRR), gateways, and qualification activities (in-house/external).
- Collaborate with test houses: Overseeing interoperability testing, test harnesses/fixtures, and external facility management.
- Drive continuous improvement in systems engineering techniques, tools, and processes for consistency and efficiency.
- Deliver mentorship, training, and expertise to junior engineers/non-technical team members. |

Expertise Areas:
- Tech leadship: Line Management of 2-6 Systems Engineers or Technical Track Management of 1-5 specialist SEs (tasking/delivery accountability).
- Safety & security compliance for IV&V operations (duty of care, classified data).
Essential Requirements
- Current or recent SC security clearance eligibility (or proven ability to attain DV clearance if required for terms).
- UK domestic travel flexibility for stakeholder/CSAT engagements.
- Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics or equivalent industry experience.
- 10+ years in defence/aviation/Multifunctional System/Internal IV&V, preferably with mil/oz-specialist defence systems (including assemblies involving HW, SW, Firmware).
- Hands-on experience designing/deploying special-to-type test equipment across concurrent defence projects.
- Artefact generation (requirements documents, test scripts, compliance evidence).
- IS0 15288 INCOSE Systems Engineering included compliance + IV&V under ISO 29119.
- Familiarity with test environment safety/risks (e.g., QPL standardised training/testing).
Desirable
- ASEP/CSEP (INCOSE certification).
- Certifications in IV&V/Testing e.g., *CSTE (Computer Programming Specialist in Engineering).
- Subject matter expertise in environmental testing/ISO17025, environmental modelling, or emission-focused design/development (TEMPEST, EMC, EMI).
- Test automation proficiency: Familiarity with frameworks (e.g., Python, scripting, TDD/BDD), test harnesses, and toolchains.
- Costing technical/IV&V experience for bid/change pricing if applicable.

- Hold an eligible SC licence or are required to obtain/upgrade clearance.
- Live in the UK but lack 5 years’ residency for SC or 10 years for DV (see UKSV guidelines). British citizenship and residency requirements apply for certain roles.
