Principal Systems Engineer – UK & Ireland Signal Systems
Location: Hatfield (AL10 9TQ) – Onsite (5 days per week) Appointment: Permanent Salary: Competitive – extends to £80k (DOE) Closing Date: 28/02/25

We’re seeking a full-time Principal Systems Engineer in Hatfield to lead the development and delivery of SSI (System Solutions & Integration) and SMARTLOCK technologies for railway signalling across the UK and Ireland. The role will focus on systems engineering excellence, process improvement, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver reliable, safe, and innovative railway solutions.
Your Key Responsibilities
As Principal Systems Engineer, you will:

Systems Delivery & Project Leadership
- Lead the development, adaptation, introduction, and delivery of SML 400 (SMARTLOCK), MooN, Smart Gateway, SmartIO, Support System, and Test Environments for signalling systems.
- Ensure fit-for-purpose tools and processes are maintained through regular reviews, proactive improvements, and rollouts.
- Deliver standardised objectives and optimal system solutions across allocated projects.

Technical Excellence & Safety Compliance
- Apply reliability, maintainability, and safety principles to all project solutions.
- Compliance with systems standards, client requirements, and company procedures.
- Safety assurance through Common Safety Methods (CSM) for system/proproducts.
- Align systems input for tenders and contribute to technical documentation validation.

Team & Customer Support
- Manage technical teams for Systems Engineers.
- Provide second-line product support to customers in the field.
Essential Requirements
We value passion and an innovative mindset over rigid experience. However, you should have:
- BSc or MSc in engineering (engineering-related fields preferred), especially in control systems, electrical, or systems engineering.
- Professional experience or knowledge of systems engineering management.
- Understanding of UK railway safety approval processes and client/system standards.
- Familiarity with software development or scripting is advantageous.
Desirable (but not essential):
- Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification.
- Commercial/financial awareness.
- Experience in a railway systems engineering environment.
