New Job Opportunity - Principal Technical Safety Engineer - Permanent Staff - Based in Basingstoke

Location: Basingstoke
Salary: Negotiable
Hybrid: 2 days office, 3 days from home (Flexible)

Role Overview

The company is seeking a Principal Engineer, Technical Safety to join its team in Basingstoke. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical leadership across Technical Safety activities, supporting complex projects, and ensuring compliance with company, national, and international standards. They will be capable of performing, when required, all duties and responsibilities associated with lower grade positions, in addition to the responsibilities outlined below.

Key Responsibilities

Procedures, Standards & Quality Systems

  • Critically review the suitability and accuracy of company technical procedures and develop new procedures where required.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of quality management procedures relating to all aspects of project delivery.
  • Provide expert guidance on the interpretation and application of national and international standards.

Technical Leadership

  • Prepare and review complex and/or unique engineering calculations and analyses.
  • Review, check, and approve engineering deliverables produced by less experienced engineers, identifying and evaluating alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Perform the Technical Safety Project Discipline Lead (PDL) role on large and complex projects.
  • Ensure all activities associated with the design and delivery of a safe plant are completed in accordance with project requirements and company standards.
  • Act as the discipline technical representative when liaising with Our Clients Headquarters and third parties.
  • Provide technical input and support during proposal and tender activities.
  • Coordinate on-site pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, and performance test run activities as required.

Software & Systems

  • Approve the use of engineering software for unusual or non-standard applications.
  • Represent the Technical Safety discipline during the implementation and rollout of new software systems.

Stakeholder & Relationship Management

  • Engage with Our Clients Headquarters and Joint Venture (JV) partners as required by the project organisation.
  • Support the Department Chief Engineer in the preparation of proposals, bids, and manpower estimates.
  • Mentor, coach, and support the development of less experienced engineers.
  • Undertake national and international business travel as required.
  • Manage communications with Knowledge Owners and Technical Authorities at Headquarters regarding the review, discussion, and approval of deviations from Our Clients standards and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Technical Safety teams across the wider business to ensure methodologies, analyses, and calculations remain aligned with Our Clients Operating Procedures and Standards.
  • For complex projects, coordinate Technical Safety resources by balancing workloads and allocating activities according to competency, experience, and project requirements.

Organisation, Leadership & Autonomy

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills together with a positive, collaborative, and proactive approach.
  • Motivate team members and make sound decisions independently when required.
  • Perform the administrative duties associated with the Technical Safety PDL and Study Manager roles, as appropriate.
  • Effectively plan, prioritise, and deliver allocated work within agreed schedules and man-hour budgets.
  • Support the Department Chief Engineer in resource planning and identifying recruitment requirements.
  • Contribute to employee appraisal processes through the provision of performance feedback and recommendations.
  • Prepare discipline man-hour estimates for new proposals and project variations resulting from scope changes.
  • Deliver internal Technical Safety training and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Deputise for the Department Chief Engineer when required.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Significant experience leading large-scale projects involving a broad range of Technical Safety activities.
  • Proven ability to oversee and review work undertaken by third-party engineering contractors and consultants.
  • Demonstrable technical expertise in at least one specialist Technical Safety area or technology.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques.
  • Experience operating within the oil and gas, energy, petrochemical, or related process industries.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary project teams.

Qualifications

  • Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g. Chemical Engineering), accredited by a recognised professional engineering institution such as IChemE.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or demonstrable progress towards chartership, is desirable.
  • Relevant Technical Safety certifications or specialist training would be advantageous.
