About the Role
An extraordinary job—done by someone like you
As an Operational Support Grade (OSG), you will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of a busy prison. Your duties will include:
- Security and gate searches
- Managing deliveries
- Supervising visitors
- Monitoring phone calls and CCTV footage
This high-energy role combines desk-based tasks with hands-on physical work, such as:
- Lifting and carrying
- Walking with escorted vehicles across prison grounds
Travel to Work
Some prison estates are in rural areas with limited public transport, so provision of your own transport is beneficial (though not always mandatory unless specified*). A valid full UK driving licence (including D1 vehicle category) is highly advantageous, allowing you to operate certain vehicles (up to 16 passenger seats, max 8m length, and trailer up to 750kg).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
