Operational Support Grade – Prison Staff

About the Role

HMP Erlestoke | £30,491

Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service for an extraordinary opportunity to support public safety and contribute to justice through operational delivery.

As an Operational Support Grade (OSG), you’ll be instrumental in the daily operations of a high-functioning prison. This varied, hands-on role includes:

  • Securing entrances and exits (gate security, external searches)
  • Managing deliveries and permits
  • Supervising restricted prisoner areas and visitors
  • Monitoring CCTV and handling calls
  • Acting as a mobile team member with daytime escorts and cells routing
  • Supporting nearly all prison functionality, from security to resource movement

While this is a non-classified role, you’ll perform essential – yet frequently unseen – tasks. Your work ensures those who deliver direct custody are more effective, safer, and supported in their duty.

Key Responsibilities

  • Security Gatekeeping: Perform external/cordon searches, manage visitor accession, restrict and contact details.

  • Operational Support: Assist in the trailer duties of FEIM AT, prisoner intake paired with enquiry champs, and escorting mobile teams of confined units.

  • Compliance & Customer Service: Potentially fielding public KIS inquiries via phone/face-to-face.

  • Monitoring and Duty Actions: respond fast in support of CCTV goals on a per-day Djanela system.

  • The breadth of eligibility rounded by clear guidance on proactive thinking upfront for short and long-term customer service scenarios.

Certifications & Minimum Requirements

This position is ideal for a great common-sense person—no formal qualifications required—but:
