About the Role
This is an extraordinary job, made for someone like you. As an Operational Support Grade (OSG), you’ll play a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operations of a busy prison.
Your diverse responsibilities may include:
- Conducting security and searches at prison entrances
- Managing deliveries to the facility
- Supervising visitors and ensuring controlled access
- Monitoring phone calls and CCTV systems
- Performing physical tasks, such as lifting, carrying, and escorting individuals in designated vehicles across the prison grounds
The role combines desk-based duties with active, hands-on work—keeping you engaged in a fast-paced environment.

What It Takes
This position offers an opportunity for someone with a practical mindset and excellent communication skills who can remain calm under pressure. There are no formal qualifications required, but you’ll need:
- Good judgement and common sense
- Strong ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Problem-solving skills and adaptability in dynamic environments
- Willingness to work various shifts, including weekends and nights
You’ll Have MeaningfulImpact
As an OSG, you’ll contribute to keeping the public safe and supporting essential work within prisons. While contact with prisoners is limited (though occasional interaction may occur depending on the prison), you’ll gain deep insights into how prisons operate.
This role can be a stepping stone toward other opportunities in the prison service, including eligibility for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
