The Role
Title: Privacy and Commercial Counsel & Data Protection Officer (DPO) (Maternity Cover)
Location: Euston, London (Office-based, UK) Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM*
You will report to the Head of Legal & HR and will be responsible for:
- Serving as the UK Data Protection Officer (DPO) and leading all privacy compliance duties.
- Collaborating with colleagues in the US on data privacy matters.
Key Responsibilities
Data Privacy & Compliance
- Liaise with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with UK GDPR and broader privacy laws.
- Lead Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and manage data privacy risks.
- Work with OneTrust technology and provide input on:
- International Data Transfers (IDTAs)
- Privacy by design for product development
- Incident management protocols and legal playbooks
- Draft, implement, and improve minimum legal knowledge templates, protocols, and policies.
- Demonstrate leadership in a "privacy by design/default" and "ethical AI/responsible product development" approach in a fast-moving tech space.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, including Security, Clinical Operations, and the entire eMed Legal team.

Consultation & Problem-Solving
- Conduct horizon scanning on legal and privacy risks, proposing actionable solutions.
- Provide commercial input on contracts, advising on:
- Privacy terms in vendor/partner agreements
- Contract oversight and risk management
Team Management & Development
- Line manage a junior Data Privacy Manager (or additional delegations) to assist in ongoing privacy programmes.
- Train internal teams on privacy policies, legal risks, and compliance protocols.
Core Competencies
Essential Requirements ⚖️
- You are a qualified UK lawyer with in-house legal experience (minimum 2-3 years post-qualification), previously at either:
- A top-tier City firm, or a legal team of a regulated UK organisation, or international tech/health org.
- Strong ability to balance a pragmatic, collaborative approach with technical legal excellence.
- Demonstrated ability to influence high-level decisions and inspire trust in varied stakeholders.
- Exceptional drafting and stakeholder communication skills.
**Desirable (Nice to Have) 🌱
- Experience in UK healthcare and/or technology sectors.
- Familiarity with prudent health regulation and commercial contracts/collaborations.
