We are seeking a Privacy and Commercial Counsel & Data Protection Officer (DPO) to join our Legal Department on maternity cover. The role will report to the Head of Legal and HR, leading on all UK privacy compliance and collaborating with colleagues in the US on data privacy matters.


About the Role

This is an office-based position located in Euston, London. We operate Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with regulatory authorities and serve as the Data Protection Officer (DPO)
  • Advise on privacy initiatives, including:
    • Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
    • International Data Transfer Agreements (IDTAs)
    • Privacy by design for product development
    • Incident management
    • Collaboration with OneTrust technology framework
    • Development of legal templates, playbooks, and policies
  • Conduct horizon scanning to analyse upcoming legal and privacy risks and propose risk-mitigation strategies
  • Advise on general commercial matters, including:
    • Contract negotiation with vendors and partners
    • Creation of internal templates
  • Train teams on privacy compliance
  • Line-manage the Data Privacy Manager
  • Assist in Legal team development, refining templates, playbooks, and policies to address evolving business needs
  • Negotiate and draft privacy terms in agreements with vendors and partners
  • Develop practical privacy solutions in collaboration with Subject Matter Experts (Security, Clinical Operations, etc.)
  • Build trusting relationships with senior stakeholders
  • Assess impact of regulatory changes on the business and help set risk tolerance levels
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency and highest standards of accuracy
  • General contract management and oversight

Requirements

Essential

  • A qualified UK lawyer with in-house legal experience
  • At least 2–3 years’ post-qualification experience either:
    • At a top-tier City firm, or
    • In an in-house legal team of a large organisation
  • Ability to balance pragmatism with technical legal expertise
  • Strong commercial acumen to influence stakeholders and inspire confidence
  • Suggestion of big-picture thinking that facilitates commercial value for the business
  • Exceptional communication and drafting skills

Desirable

  • Healthcare or technology industry experience (any legal background)
  • Willingness to undertake health regulatory and commercial work
