Job Description
Overview of the Job
Post holders will undertake the full range of offender management tasks with people on probation, including:
- Assessment
- Sentence implementation
- Writing reports
- Applying service procedures and practice directions to underpin professional judgement.
Summary of Key Objectives
To assess and manage the risk posed by people on probation to protect victims of crime and the general public by:
- Providing information and advice to:
- Criminal courts
- Other criminal justice agencies
- Partner organisations
- Supervising people on probation subject to:
- Community orders
- Licences
- Custodial sentences
- Contributing to risk management
- Working with agencies and groups to:
- Prevent crime
- Meet needs of victims
- Support individuals on probation

- Adherence to PS (Probation Service) policies on equality, inclusion, and confidentiality.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties
Probation Officers may undertake any combination of the following tasks:
- Writing professional reports for courts, Parole Board, justice agencies, or partner organisations.
- Managing all levels of offender risk, including high and very high risk.
- Operating computer systems to document cases and update records within deadlines.
- Ensuring effective referrals across:
- Offender management teams
- Court teams
- Victim contact units
- Interventions centres
- Approved Premises
- Prisons
- External agencies (to reduce reoffending, enhance outcomes, and manage risk).
- Attending professional fora (e.g., MAPPA, MARAC) and representing PS.
- Collaborating with colleagues and offering guidance to Probation Services Officers (PSOs).
- Covering duties for colleagues in or outside the team.
- Conducting discretionary visits to:
- Prisons
- Home environments
- Alternative locations
- Delivering accredited programmes aligned with grade-level expectations.
- Conducting mandatory alcohol and drug tests and managing prescribed medication.
- Upholding safeguarding duties, including effective interventions for children and vulnerable adults.
- Practising pro-social modelling by:
- Reinforcing positive behaviour.
- Challenging anti-social attitudes.
- Adhering to ** Prison Service (PS) and Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) values**.

Essential Experience
- Experience working with diverse individuals facing social/personal difficulties.

- Proven ability working with people convicted of offences.
Technical Requirements
Must hold:
- A Probation Officer qualification, or currently be qualified to practice.
Qualification Options (mandatory):
- PQF Honours Degree/Graduate Diploma + Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice; OR
- Diploma in Probation Studies; OR
- Diploma in Social Work (Probation) path; OR
- CQSW (Probation option).
Core Knowledge Requirements:
- Depth of understanding of:
- Criminal Justice System
- Probation Service policy
- Working knowledge of:
- Legislation relating to probation
- National Standards
- Proficient use of:
- Risk/needs assessment tools
- Evidence-Based Practice methods
