Probation Service Officer - Advance into Justice - National (Ref: 16895)

Probation Services Officer – Fixed Term (24 Months)

Location Preferences

  • East Midlands (England), East of England, London (region), North East England
  • North West England, South East England, South West England, Wales
  • West Midlands (England), Yorkshire and the Humber

Eligibility for Advance into Justice Scheme

This role is open to the following groups under the Advance into Justice Scheme:

  • Armed Forces service leavers within their resettlement period and due to leave within 18 months
  • Veterans of the Armed Forces
  • Spouses or civil partners of Armed Forces service leavers or veterans (where the partner is currently serving or was discharged within the last 12 months).
  • Armed Forces Reservists

This is a fixed-term role for 24 months.


Job Summary

Job Title: Probation Services Officer Department: HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS)

Helping society by managing offenders and providing enablement support to change lives while safeguarding the public. Role includes assessments, sentence supervision, risk management, and offender casework.


About the Role

Key Responsibilities

The Probation Services Officer plays a vital role in managing medium and lower-risk offenders on probation before or after sentence. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing and implementing sentences following service procedures.
  • Case management involving risk evaluation, psychological insights, and community safety considerations.
  • Supporting offenders with:
    • Practical advice (housing, employment, substance misuse).
    • Emotional and social integration.
  • Producing clear, professional reports for courts, agencies, and supervision.
  • Collaborating with courts, social services, police, and other justice sector agencies.

Essential Requirements for Success

  • Empathetic & Resilient – Ability to engage with offenders, comprehend diverse socio-economic backgrounds, and respond constructively.
  • Excellent Communication – Written and verbal. Reports must be clear, accurate, concise, and submitted per deadlines.
  • Organisational Skills – Managing a caseload on sometimes tight deadlines.

Pay & Benefits

Starting Salary: £28,064 (p.a.)

  • Pro Rata for part-time roles.
