Environmental Wastewater Operations Manager

Location: Coslech (Pontyclun) | Salary Range: £28,065.00 – £31,887.00 (base)

About the Role

You will operate and maintain 833 wastewater treatment sites across our region, ensuring compliance with environmental permits, Health & Safety, and company Quality Management Systems (QMS). Responsibilities include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational & Maintenance Oversight

    • Manage multiple Wastewater Treatment Works (WWW) and sewage pumping stations, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
    • Conduct general maintenance of equipment and sites, enforcing rigorous house-keeping standards.
    • Collect and analyse effluent samples to monitor and optimise biological performance.
    • Report and escalate defects promptly to relevant teams.
  • ** Reaction & Risk Management**

    • Identify and resolve reactive work as needed, liaising with cross-disciplinary craft teams to facilitate repairs.
    • Actively prevent pollution risks from assets, escalating threats per company protocols.
    • Develop risk mitigation strategies and ensure compliance with regulatory bodies (Environment Agency/NRW).
  • Team Coordination & Safety

    • Collaborate with area Supervisors to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Uphold Health & Safety procedures for personal and team accountability.
    • Adhere to QMS requirements to maintain audit compliance.
  • Coverage & Flexibility

    • Safely cover for annual leave and sickness within the operational area.
    • Commit to a 1-in-4 weekend rota, including potential Bank Holiday coverage.
    • Undertake unplanned duties as required by operational needs.
    • Participate in on-call standby, ready to address (pollution) emergencies.

Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

✅ Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or higher (or equivalent, e.g. BTEC, ONC/HNC) – desirable but not mandatory.

✅ Technical & Regulatory Awareness

  • Strong experience of Health & Safety compliance standards.
  • Understanding of regulated treatment systems (e.g., Environment Agency/NRW frameworks).
  • Proficiency with computer systems/software used for monitoring, reporting, and compliance tracking.

✅ Attitude & Compliance

  • Passionate about environmental protection and operational efficiency.
  • Willingness to healthy scepticism for permit adherence.
  • Team-player mentality, ready to participate in training/development opportunities.

  • Work Environment & Conditions

    • You’ll balance planned and unplanned work, with a mix of shift hours (including weekends and Bank Holidays).
    • Overtime will be considered on a reasonable basis.
    • Company vehicle provided for operations covering the Vale of Glamorgan.
