About the Role
Product Safety & Compliance & Validation ensures ITM’s electrolyser portfolio meets compliance, functional safety, validation, and testing standards for real-world deployment.
Key Responsibilities

Technical Safety Leadership
- Act as the Technical Safety Authority, overseeing HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA studies (analysis, close-out, and MOC management).
- Develop ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) principles and calculations for LOPA assessments.

Risk Assessment
- Lead Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) activities including:
- HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA, with accountability for progress tracking and action closure (including LOPA close-out chairing).
- Support creation of Basis of Safety documentation.
- Lead Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) activities including:

Technical Standards & Compliance
- Expertise in IEC 61508 (Functional Safety) and IEC 61511 across all design stages (analysis, design, implementation, operation, maintenance).
- Lead development of a Functional Safety Management (FSM) plan (stages 1–5).

Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor a small team of safety engineers.
- Conduct 6-monthly training and competency reviews of the Product Safety Team.

Safety Framework Development
- Build and implement process safety management frameworks.
- Draft/review Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) proof test procedures.

Risk Analysis & SIL Calculations
- Proficient in Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA), including Safety Integrity Level (SIL) verification through RBDs (Reliability Block Diagrams) and FTA (Fault Tree Analysis).
- Improve cross-functional awareness of process/functional safety via training, guidance, and mentoring to Design, Engineering, and Testing teams.

Stakeholder Liaison
- Engage with customers and regulators as necessary.
About You
Knowledge & Experience

Education Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical, Electrical, or related engineering (Chartered status or pursuing membership in recognised organisations like IChemE).

Industry Expertise
- Minimum 5 years as a Process/Functional Safety Engineer in hydrogen, chemicals, or industrial gases.
- Certified Functional Safety Expert (e.g., TÜV FS Engineer; advantageous).

Study & Regulation Experience
- Certified/experienced in managing safety studies (including HAZOP/LOPA chairing).
- Gas expertise (hydrogen/oxygen hazard interpretation).
- Knowledge of explosive atmospheres (IEC 60079, ATEX/DSEAR).
- Fluency in hazardous area classification (tools like Phast, Quadvent).

Legal & Compliance
- Familiarity with UK/EU safety/compliance regulations.
- Experience with TECAD directives, ATEX equipment, and DSEAR/DSEAR safety cases.

Technical & Certification Requirements
- Certified Functional Safety Engineer.
- ISO 22734 electrolyser standard knowledge (advantageous).
