Procurement Manager (Resources, Place & Capital )
About The Role
At West Northants Council, it’s about our people and the difference they make. As a Procurement Manager, you’ll play a key role in helping us deliver high-quality services to our residents by providing expert procurement support across the organisation. Working within our Corporate Finance and Procurement team, you’ll help shape commercial decisions, support transformation projects and ensure public money is invested effectively and responsibly.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team that works at the heart of the organisation, supporting a diverse portfolio of services and projects. As one of England’s largest unitary councils, we offer the scale and complexity needed to develop your expertise while giving you the opportunity to influence strategic decisions and deliver meaningful outcomes for local communities.
We know that people thrive when they have flexibility and balance in their lives. That’s why we offer a range of flexible working arrangements, helping colleagues achieve a positive work-life balance while continuing to grow their careers.
What will you be doing?
- You’ll lead and manage a range of high-value and complex procurement projects, providing strategic advice to senior leaders and service areas across the Council.
- Working collaboratively with stakeholders, you’ll develop procurement strategies, lead tender processes and ensure all procurement activity is compliant, efficient and aligned with organisational priorities.
- You’ll research market opportunities, identify innovative solutions and support service areas in delivering value for money while managing commercial and legislative risks.
- Through strong business partnering, you’ll help shape future procurement requirements and contribute to service redesign, transformation and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Alongside your procurement projects, you’ll support the development of procurement knowledge and capability across the organisation by mentoring colleagues, sharing best practice and helping teams build confidence in procurement and commercial decision-making.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
