Production Planning & Control Specialist – Newport News Shipbuilding Field Office
About the Role
Join Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII)’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS)—the largest industrial employer in Virginia—where we design, build, and refuel the U.S. Navy’s most advanced nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines. This crucial role focuses on Planning and Production Control at the onsite X83 Field Office at Electric Boat (Groton, CT), coordinating schedules and material management for COLUMBIA and Virginia Class Submarines across disciplines:
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Structural
- Sheet metal
- Piping
The Primary Responsibilities include:
- Developing, controlling, and communicating production schedules tied to material requirements.
- Ensuring timely material flow to meet production deadlines.
- Assessing work-in-progress (WIP) status, material availability, and potential production bottlenecks.
- Preparing work orders, purchase requests, and equipment schedules based on master production plans and inventory data.
- Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Engineering, Inventory Control, and Logistics).
- Expediting parts movement (move orders, stock transfers, shipping requests).
- Scheduling personnel/equipment allocation to support project goals.
Requirements
Must Have
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree (any field) or equivalent experience (see alternatives below).
- OR
- NNS Apprentice School graduate.
- Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate.
- Associate’s degree + 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of non-exempt experience.
- Military rank E-5+ with experience in manufacturing/shipbuilding/trades.
- High School/GED + 4+ years of exempt experience or 8+ years of non-exempt experience in:
- Manufacturing
- Shipbuilding
- Skilled trades
- Military/combat roles

Experience:
- 3 years (for Bachelor’s degree) or 1 year (for Master’s degree) in relevant exempt-level work (e.g., planning, logistics, project coordination).

Job-Specific Skills:
- Proficiency in scheduling techniques (network-based planning tools preferred).
- Familiarity with production control methodologies in a shipbuilding/defense environment.
- Ability to collaborate across departments (e.g., Program Office, Construction Projects, Trades).

Tools:
- Experience (or willingness) to learn:
- Microsoft Office (SQL converions helpful, but not essential)
- SAP
- Artemis/Teamcenter/NX
- Experience (or willingness) to learn:
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with Navy nuclear shipbuilding processes (e.g., NNS, NNPS kuruks, long-lead item tracking).
- Technical knowledge of submarine systems (structural, mechanical, electrical).
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills for high-impact projects.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $63,000–$79,000 per year (based on experience).
