Job Title: Product Design Engineer
Location: Glasgow (Hybrid – 3 days on site) Department: Engineering Hours: Monday – Friday (40 hrs p/w)

Role Summary
You’ll be a key contributor to our Engineering team, leading the design and engineering of our lifesaving products with high autonomy and responsibility. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, your role will include:
- Strategic development of our product range.
- Design iteration across the full lifecycle—from concept to market launch and lifecycle support.
- Ensuring products are functional, intuitive, empathetic, and aesthetically considered.
- Direct impact in schools, hospitals, and mental health facilities.
Key Responsibilities

Lead product design and development:
- From ideation to detailed design and prototyping.
- For both new products and significant product enhancements.

Champion user-centric methodologies:
- Deep understanding of user needs, behaviors, and pain points in the mental health sector.
- Champion design thinking, user research, rapid prototyping, usability testing.

Process and product improvements:
- Drive iterative redesigns focused on user experience, manufacturability, and quality.

Research and decision-making:
- Conduct competitor analysis, material exploration, and trend identification.
- Translate user insights and business requirements into practical design solutions.

Regulatory compliance:
- Ensure alignment with fire and acoustics standards (e.g., British HSGA compliance).
- Oversee external product testing with relevant bodies.

Testing and validation:
- Develop test plans incorporating user testing and voC (Voice of Customer).
- Validate design decisions through quality assurance.

Technical documentation:
- Create clear, user-friendly documentation for installation, use, and maintenance.

Manufacturing support:
- Collaborate with external suppliers for production launch.
- Maintain design integrity throughout manufacturing.

Problem resolution:
- Analyze and resolve technical issues using Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Lead revision iterations where required.

What You’ll Bring

Portfolio and experience:
- Proven product design and development track record.
- Strong design process showcase (design thinking, user research, rapid prototyping, iterative refinement).

User-centric expertise:
- Demonstrated skill in design thinking, usability testing, and empathetic problem-solving.

End-to-end design mastery:
- Broad understanding of concept generation to manufacturing specifications.

Manufacturing acumen:
- In-depth knowledge of injection moulding, casting, sheet metal work, machining, and extrusions.
- Focus on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

Technical proficiency:
- SolidWorks (preferred), with 3D CAD modeling and detailed technical drawing skills.
- Experience managing Bills of Materials (BOMs) and assessing design impacts on cost/complexity.

Risk analysis and evaluation:
- Competency in FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) or similar risk assessment methodologies.

Fabrication and prototyping:
- Experience in building and iterating prototypes in workshop settings for user feeding back.

Change and approval processes:
- Familiarity with design approval workflows and adherence to regulatory standards.

Communication skills:
- Ability to articulate design concepts clearly to stakeholders, teams, and customers.
- Use of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (for presentations and documentation).

Administrative and organisational skills:
- Highly organised, with strong attention to detail in a multitasking environment.
- Fundamental IT skills are essential.

Education:
- A relevant Engineering qualification is critical.
