Role: Product Design Engineer

Job Purpose

To develop innovative mechanical design solutions to current and future aerospace industry challenges, focusing on:

  • Existing and next-generation smart motor and power generation technologies
  • Leading and delivering project-based engineering work packages to deliver mature and robust mechanical solutions meeting manufacturing, cost, and weight targets

Dimensions

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create and support robust mechanical design solutions for R&D / R&T projects, ensuring designs meet business and customer needs
  • Support and/or manage one or more Mechanical Design Engineering Work Packages
  • Interface with:
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Stress & Thermal
    • Supply Chain
    • Industrialisation
    • Validation and Verification (V&V)
    • Configuration and Quality
  • Ensure designs comply with ‘Design to Cost’ and ‘Design to Manufacture/Assembly’ requirements

Principal Accountabilities

Technical & Engineering Leadership

  • Ensure regular reporting to Lead Engineers (Principal and/or Senior Principal Engineers) on work-package status
  • Maintain CAD models, drawings, and parts lists compliant with company standards
  • Produce Design Assurance documentation, including:
    • Design reports
    • Test procedures
    • Hand/stress calculations (interference fits, thermal growth, hoop/tensile stresses, thread loadings, tolerance analyses)
  • Support engineering design investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to mitigate risk and mature products
  • Lead or support gateway reviews for Product Introduction Processes (PROMPT & DEVELOP)
  • Author, review, and approve technical documentation via selection and sign-off (subject to Client approval)
  • Monthly KPI milestone delivery aligned with project timescales

Training & Mentorship

  • Deliver technical training, mentorship, and leadership support to improve:
    • Technical and behavioral skills across Product Design & Electromechanical teams
    • Continuous product design improvements

Key Performance Measures

  • High-quality, robust designs (Models, drawings, BOM’s) with a DFA/DFM (Design for Assembly/Manufacturing) and "Right First Time" mindset
  • Stakeholder satisfaction (Internal/External via effective communication and support)
  • Execution against milestones (On-time and budget)
  • Quality Design Assurance Documentation (Process-aligned and standards-compliant)
  • Consistent, agreed KPI delivery (Month-on-month)
  • Performance objectives completion within annual review timelines
  • Personal/focused development (Programming competency, product knowledge, SEGULA processes/procedures)
  • Team skills growth via mentoring and leadership support
  • Engineering Approval Status or higher certification
  • Nomination to:
    • Safran ‘Specialist’ status
    • Safran ‘Expert Status’ or higher

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Aeronautical Engineering (or equivalent work experience)
  • Mechanical design experience using:
    • CATIA V5
    • Windchill
    • Rotating equipment (shafts, bearings, seals, structures)
  • Understanding of engineering materials and production methods
  • Electromechanical Design & Engineering experience with 3D CAD tools
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate clearly (written & verbally) across business levels
    • Collaborate with other engineering teams
    • Plan work effectively while managing timelines and resource priorities
    • Work independently under pressure to meet project & program deadlines

Desirable Experience

  • Direct familiarity with high-speed power generation & motor technologies
  • Basic understanding of Mechatronics and Electronics
  • Customer engagement experience (Internal & External Stakeholders)
  • Experience defining and approving deliverables for engineering service suppliers (Statements of Work)
