About The Role
The Product Design Lead is responsible for developing innovative automation and engineering concepts across a range of projects for Royal Mail, its customers and partners. Working as part of the Design Engineering team, you will translate business and operational requirements into practical, scalable and cost-effective engineering solutions.
This role combines product design, systems thinking and engineering expertise to deliver automation layouts, process flows and 3D visualisations that support projects from concept through to development and implementation.
This is a key role within the Engineering function and will involve working closely with the Managing Director and senior stakeholders to shape future engineering solutions. The role is national and requires regular travel to sites including Gloucester, the Midlands and other locations as required.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop conceptual automation and engineering designs using research and operational analysis.
- Translate business requirements into engineering concepts and solution designs.
- Produce layouts, process flows and 3D models to support project development.
- Assess feasibility, risks and high-level costs of proposed solutions.
- Support projects from concept through to implementation.
- Contribute to design reviews and engage with key stakeholders.
- Champion innovation and continuous improvement within Engineering.

Lead by example and support the development of the wider
About You
- Qualified in Product Design, Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in automation, engineering systems or solution design within industrial or logistics environments.
- Strong skills in conceptual design, process flows, CAD and 3D visualisation.
- Able to translate business requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience developing high-level cost estimates and feasibility assessments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience with design and modelling packages such as Autodesk, Inventor, Fusion 360 or SolidWorks is desirable.
- Flexible and willing to travel nationally as required.
