Product Lead, Legal Engine

Who we are and what we’re doing

There's an age-old problem in professional services: not enough information gets written down. This leads to inefficiency, missed opportunities and people spending their days on duct-taping work instead of anything meaningful or fulfilling. We're using the latest agentic AI to solve this problem; voice-first capture paired with agent-driven use, and we're starting with law firms.

Founded in 2025, we’re already live with several national and international firms and scaling quickly. Product-market fit is proven, as is the market’s willingness to buy. The next step is building faster and better.

The role

You'd be our first hire beyond the four of us. That means direct exposure to some genuinely novel product work, and a real chance to test yourself on problems that don't have obvious answers.

One thing defines this role: you turn a customer's real problem into a specification a machine can build from. Ambiguity gets resolved once, by you, not constantly re-surfaced over time.

AI agents have collapsed the cost of writing software to almost nothing. They haven't touched the cost of deciding what to build, proving it's safe, or convincing a law firm to trust it. The binding constraint has moved from generating code to understanding, verifying and judging — and that's still human work, and what we want from this role.

How we work

We don't do sprints. A formally-verified specification does the alignment work standing meetings would — decisions get written down once — and single artefacts provide the transparency.

You run the discovery conversation and come out with these structured, machine-readable briefs, precise enough that an agent-assisted engineer, or an agent, can build against it without going back to the customer.

That means:

  • Sitting with our customers and getting to the bottom of what they actually need. Not what they say they need.
  • Turning those conversations into structured specifications our engineering process can build from directly. If you've used Claude Code and have opinions on how to write specs for it, that's the kind of thing we're looking for.
  • Looking across our customers and spotting where three different requirements are secretly the same product, or where they're not. Helping to make the call on which we invest in.
  • Building the business case for what we build and what we don't; NPV, second-order effects etc. You should enjoy this kind of thinking.
  • Helping decide what gets built next. You'll sit between what Sam and Lee hear from clients and what Edu is building — turning conversations into the specs, demos and prototypes that set his day-to-day priorities.
  • Supporting with our compliance and procurement paperwork. DPIAs, RFP responses, InfoSec questionnaires. Not glamorous, but this is where deals get won or lost, and it needs someone who can hold their own with a General Counsel or a Head of IT.
  • Preparing the client-facing materials that go alongside a build. Training, onboarding, first-90-days documentation.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What success looks like

Six months in, we'd expect you to have:

  • Built out standardised product specs across everything we offer.
  • Cut Edu's client meetings by more than half.
  • Taken over DPIAs, RFP responses, and the rest of the compliance workload.
  • Taken the lead on how we prioritise what to build.
  • Earned the trust of a real chunk of our client base — they should be bringing you their ideas, not the other way round.

Who we're looking for

You’ll be great in this role if:

  • You've built products before and have views on what makes them good. You think in responsibilities, not features.
  • You're technical enough to write your own specs and iterate them until they work. Not so technical that you'd rather be building the thing yourself.
  • You've held your own in senior stakeholder rooms.
  • You care about clarity and usability at a level that most people find slightly tiresome.
  • You'd rather have five things on your plate and figure out which two matter than have one narrow remit.
  • You’re keen to experience what it's like inside a small AI company that's early, moving fast, and already selling to real clients.

We're hiring for attitude and potential more than exact track record. If the job interests you but you don't tick every box, we still want to hear from you.

You probably won't enjoy this role if you want a backlog handed to you and a definition of done written by someone else; if you'd rather write a feature list than resolve the ambiguity underneath it; or if you treat a compliance questionnaire as paperwork to clear rather than a promise to a client.

What we're offering

  • Base salary up to £80k (depending on experience), with a salary-for-equity conversion option if you want to weight the deal toward upside.
  • EMI equity scheme.
  • MacBook and home office setup provided.
  • Unlimited annual leave, plus UK bank holidays.
  • Workplace pension — 5% employer contribution.
  • £500 annual learning and development budget.
  • Fully remote, UK-based. London-adjacent preferred, but not necessary.

You'll report to Sam (CEO), with a strong working relationship with Edu (CTO).

Start date: September, ideally. Flexible for the right person.

How to apply

Send a short note to jobs@legalengine.co.uk telling us:

  • Why you're interested.
  • The clearest thing you have written explaining a technical product to a non-technical decision-maker.
  • One technical or regulatory term you did not know a year ago and now understand well enough to teach someone about.

Process

Two rounds:

  • Technical, with Edu. Ahead of the call, we'll send you a real (anonymised) customer transcript — messy and contradictory — and ask for a clean specification back. We read it for the ambiguities you resolved and the ones you flagged rather than guessed. On the call, we pressure-test the thinking together.
  • Strategic, with Sam (CEO) and Lee (CCO). We'll put a live product decision in front of you and think through it together, then a client-facing scenario.

For finalists, we offer a paid trial engagement of four to six weeks on a real piece of work. Not compulsory, but strongly encouraged. It de-risks the decision for both sides.

The small print

  • Equal opportunities. Legal Engine is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. Hiring decisions are made on merit.
  • Right to work. You must have the right to work in the UK. We aren't currently able to sponsor visas.
  • Reasonable adjustments. If you need adjustments at any stage of the process — extra time, a different format, accessibility support — tell us when you apply and we'll make it work.
  • How we handle your data. We use the information you send us solely to assess your application. We keep applicant data for six months after the process closes, then delete it. If you'd like a copy of what we hold, or want it deleted sooner, email info@legalengine.co.uk.
