Product & Process Technician – Bio-Resource Department (Permanent, Sandall WwTW)

Position Overview

Location & Commute

  • Site: Sandall Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW)
  • Ideal Commute: Rotherham, Barnsley, or Doncaster
  • Work Type: Permanent, operational (24/7/365)
  • Weekly Hours: 37 hrs on a 7-day rotational shift (07:00–19:00 Mon–Fri; including weekends with compensatory rest days)
  • Post-Training: Operational out-of-hours rota for emergencies (experience depends on training completion)

Key Responsibilities

You’ll own and operate the Sandall WwTW site daily, ensuring:

  • Routine operations & maintenance: Manual tasks, instrument calibration, reactive checks to prevent failures
  • Process efficiency & automation: Analysing data (manual/IT) to optimise treatment cost, waste, and energy
  • Cost minimisation: Driving efficiency to meet performance targets
  • Health & Safety leadership:
    • Enforcing procedures and hazard control (including Control of Work for contractors)
    • Training/inducting visitors, mitigating risks
  • Proactive problem-solving: Independent troubleshooting for age-old and legacy systems
  • Site environmental responsibility: Ensuring regulatory compliance and ecological protection

Person Specification

Skills & Experience

  • Technical aptitude: Hands-on experience with complex industrial processes, IT systems, and manual duties (preferably in an operational/process-based field)
  • Problem-solving: Ability to analyse data, diagnose issues, and make improvements
  • Prioritisation: Adapt to dynamic workflows and balance demanding operational needs
  • Working environment resilience: Comfortable with manual handling, heights, confined spaces, and sewage handling
  • Teamwork & independence: Collaborative mindset but capable of ownership and ownership-based issue resolution
  • IT skills: Proficient use of system hardware/software

Qualifications & Checks

  • Medical criteria: Must meet strict checks (e.g., BMI, vision, blood pressure, hearing (ieritive), spirometry) due to hazardous environments
  • Driving: Full, valid UK licence with no more than 6 penalty points
  • Pre-employment requirements:
    • Basic Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check
    • Possible security vetting (CTC/SC clearance)
    • Medical questionnaire + further medicals as required
