Job Description

Position: Mechanical Fitter

Location: Stroud, GL6 0BS

Employment Type: Full-time

Salary Range: £ DOE (with additional earning available with overtime)

Working Hours: Monday to Thursday, 7:30am - 4:30pm, 7:30am – 2:00pm Early Finish Friday (40 Hours)

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer with Supervisory or Team Lead Experience to join our experienced and dedicated engineering team as Supervisor/Team Leader. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of Production Staff including Mechanical and Electrical Fitters and Welders to produce company products to exacting standards and quality specifications as defined by technical drawings and written instructions. The Supervisor/Team Leader will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the team including time booking, daily targets and attendance.

Key Responsibilities

MAJOR TASKS:

  • Management of a small team of operatives through a hands-on approach
  • Adherence to and active enforcement of Health and Safety procedures for all team members
  • Promoting a positive working environment keeping staff motivated
  • Ensure that all staff are aware of and operating to company procedures
  • Identifying training needs as they appear
  • Responsibility for attendance, back to work, sickness, holidays- in conjunction with the Production Manager
  • Participate in meetings and discussions with other departments ensuring relevant information is communicated in a timely manner
  • Actively supporting senior management in the continuous improvement processes
  • Assisting the Production Manager to allocate resources according to current work priorities.
  • Allocation of daily tasks and priorities to the workforce and monitoring progress against targets
  • Monitor staff to ensure work is carried out in a timely manner and to the correct standard.
  • Ensuring all steps of the build are to the correct standard.
  • Ensure the paperwork is completed in the correct manner and at each stage of the build.
  • Signing off of the companies in progress testing and inspections within quality process documentation QF010.

GENERAL TASKS:

  • Maintain high standards of health, safety, housekeeping and environmental compliance at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, test and management teams to support business objectives.
  • Assist with the continuous improvement and development of the business.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the position as may be required by the business.
  • Team Player and can do attitude, working as part of a team or individually.
  • A keen eye for detail and flexibility.
  • Good all round knowledge of engineering with strong problem solving skills.
  • Practice of safe, clean, practical working environment.
  • Circuitry knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics and electrics would be advantageous
  • Observe the Company’s Health & Safety policy and procedures, and execute duties as required by this policy. The jobholder will hold responsibility for his / her own safety and other people’s, and shall co-operate by complying with the company’s safety rules
  • Willingness to take on responsibility within the business, for example Fire Marshall or First Aid training if/once the opportunity presents itself.
  • Use of company vehicles in line with the policy put into place.

Essential Skill & Experience:

Leadership & People Management

  • Supervisory Experience: Proven track record as a Team Leader, Supervisor, or Chargehand in an engineering environment.
  • Performance Tracking: Experience managing team attendance, time-booking, and monitoring daily production targets.
  • Communication: Ability to brief teams clearly, liaise with production managers, and collaborate with other departments.

Technical Capabilities

  • Mechanical Bench Engineering: Strong hands-on background in mechanical fitting and structural assembly.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret complex technical drawings, schematics, and engineering instructions.
  • Quality Control: Experience carrying out stage-by-stage build inspections and filling out quality compliance paperwork.

  • H&S Enforcement: Deep understanding of workshop safety rules with the confidence to actively enforce them on the shop floor.
  • Housekeeping: Commitment to maintaining high standards of workshop cleanliness and environmental safety.

Desired Skills & Experience

Technical Specialisms

  • Fluid Systems: Prior experience with high-pressure fluid transfer systems, pumps, valves, or filtration units.
  • Circuitry Knowledge: Understanding of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical circuitry.
  • Sector Experience: Background in the aviation, military, marine, or heavy commercial vehicle industries.

Certifications & Qualifications

  • Formal Education: NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or a completed apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Safety Awards: An IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH qualification.
  • Workplace Extras: Valid First Aid at Work certificate or Fire Marshall training.
  • Licences: A clean, valid UK driving licence for using company vehicles.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lean Manufacturing: Practical knowledge of 5S, Kaizen, or continuous improvement processes.
  • Software Literacy: Experience using ERP or manufacturing software to log job times and track resources.
