Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead PCB and product failure analysis activities across production, test, ensuring issues are diagnosed accurately and resolved effectively down to root cause.
  • Perform component-level fault finding on failed PCBs, assemblies, and finished products using structured diagnostic methods.
  • Investigate production, test, and field-return failures to identify technical root cause and define robust corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support product build and test activities by providing clear failure analysis feedback, containment guidance, and engineering support to production teams.
  • Produce clear root cause analysis reports for PCB and product failures, including evidence, conclusions, actions, owners, and completion timescales.
  • Apply strong electronic hardware knowledge to diagnose failures within the following areas:
    • Digital and microprocessor-based circuits.
    • Memories, DSPs, and microcontrollers.
    • Analogue.
    • Power supply circuits.
  • Work closely with Hardware Engineering, R&D, Software, Applications, Quality, Manufacturing, and Production teams to resolve PCB and product failure issues.
  • Provide technical expertise to ensure timely resolution of production-related failures on existing product ranges.
  • Ensure all investigations follow documented policies, procedures, quality standards, and traceability requirements.
  • Analyse failed production PCBs and products to identify repeat issues, trends, and opportunities for design, process, or test improvement.
  • Use structured problem-solving techniques to support containment, corrective action, and prevention of recurring failures.
  • Apply Lean principles to improve failure analysis turnaround time, investigation quality, and production support effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant electronics, electrical, manufacturing, or engineering discipline, with 2 years+ relevant experience preferred.
  • HND in Electronics with an approved apprenticeship and a minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong practical experience in PCB and product failure analysis, including component-level diagnosis and verification of failure modes.
  • Experience using appropriate test, diagnostic, design, and simulation tools to support electronic failure investigations.
  • Proven ability to lead failure investigations from initial fault identification through to root cause confirmation and full corrective action implementation within business timescales.
  • Detailed knowledge of production test philosophies and the ability to use test data to support PCB and product failure analysis.
  • High level of electronic hardware knowledge, with the ability to understand circuit designs, diagnose faults to component level, propose support solutions, and prevent recurrence.
