I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Life as a Police Officer with Avon & Somerset

In addition, I had volunteered as a Police Cadet and found the experience highly rewarding and inspirational. Excitedly, joining further with my expanding police-focused route gave me a affirming step onwards towards achieving my goal. Here's my account of the first PPD cohort—

“My first day at Police HQ was an eye-opener, made easier through familiarity with the force culture. Time and pedagogy in training resulted in a smooth transition into field patrol. The diversity of cases in my shifts has reinforced the professionalism demanded of the role.
What stood out to me is the camaraderie. ‘Team’ was often highlighted during training as a vital skillset, but joining in reality shone brightly as connecting instantly to a shared family.”*
Our team took the time to understand the nuances of the PPD route and word I was well supported upon graduation. My colleagues came from multiple backgrounds, united by dedication to community protection. Whether domestic abuse cases or recovering stolen vehicles, their teamwork epitomized the very essence of policing.”
