I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

3. Orchestrate Design Decision Governance
- Ensure EDA and BDA decisions are final, traceable, and auditable, linked clearly to enterprise objectives and S/4 design principles.
- Maintain the Design Decision Register, tracking approvals, conditions, and follow-up actions.
- Serve as secretariat and quality keeper for EDA and BDA, ensuring submissions are:
- Properly framed.
- Pre-aligned with suppliers.
- Supported by impacts, implications, recommendations.
- Set and enforce clear submission standards, templates, and pre-read expectations, ensuring forums focus on decisions (not discovery).
- Communicate outcomes effectively, including escalations requiring leadership intervention or external governance. Escalations must be design-led and evidence-based, not delivery-driven.
4. Design Coherence
- Ensure the default position is “fit to standard”; any deviations (e.g., process exceptions) must be explicitly justified, assessed for enterprise impact, and approved.
- Challenge proposals adding unnecessary debt or legacy burden, escalating to EDA when enterprise impact exists.
- Confirm design readiness prior to stage gates, verifying business and technical maturity and alignment.
- Surface unresolved design risks/dependencies explicitly to governance rather than implicit acceptance.
5. Design Interlock & Interdependent Programmes
- Establish and actively lead cross-programme design working groups to resolve interdependencies before escalation.
- Partner with workstreams and adjacent programmes to clarify:
- Definition of “done.”
- Delivery dates.
- Classifier dependencies across process, tech, data, security, and operational model dimensions.
- Assess potential local optimisation vs. enterprise-wide consequences requiring broader program scope.
- Ensure decisions from adjacent programmes are routed through correct design authorities tied to scope and impact.
- Maintain end-to-end traceability of design dependencies from identification through decision, conditions, and resolution.
6. Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders to align, accelerate decisions, and ensure consistency.
- Educate programme teams on design governance principles, promoting process standardisation and simplification.
- An advisor to senior leaders, translating complex design issues into clear binary trade-offs for decision-making.
- Adhere to escalation discipline even under delivery pressure.
