Project Manager – Neighbourhoods and Living With and Beyond Cancer Team

Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Developing Project Manager to join the Wessex Cancer Alliance Neighbourhoods and Living with and Beyond Cancer Team.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead critical programmes that will enhance personalised cancer care across Dorset, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
The Programme Manager will lead two core areas:
1. Personalised Stratified Follow-Up (PSFU) Programme
- Facilitate tumour-specific clinical agreement on PSFU protocols, balancing differing perspectives to achieve consensus on:
- Eligibility and stratification criteria
- Monitoring and escalation approaches
- Support the implementation of agreed models across multiple organisations
- Ensure governance and tracking are robustly established
- Oversee delivery, risk management, and progress across the Wessex system
- Expand PSFU into new tumour pathways and consolidate existing ones
2. Prehabilitation Programme Support
- Coordinate activity across acute, community, and voluntary sector partners
- Support pathway and service redesign, ensuring alignment with stakeholders
- Foster collaboration to deliver agreed clinical and strategic objectives

- Drive system-wide service improvement in cancer care pathways
- Facilitate consensus-building between clinical, operational, and digital partners
- Ensure patient-centred, stratified care is consistently implemented
- Champion innovation and collaboration across healthcare sectors

- End-to-end programme leadership – From planning to implementation, monitoring, and evaluation

Location & Flexibility
- Hybrid role, minimum 2 on-site days per week (Southampton/Dorchester)
- Travel required across Dorset, Hampshire, and Isle of Wight

What We’re Looking For
Proven Experience
You must demonstrate: ✅ Significant experience in healthcare service improvement or transformation (cancer/LTC focus preferred) ✅ Quality improvement (QI) methodology and service redesign expertise ✅ Strong project management skills (e.g., PRINCE2® or equivalent) ✅ Ability to cope with operational pressure, navigate complex stakeholder dynamics, and resolve conflicts ✅ Commitment to the ethos of equity and patient-centred care
Leadership Competencies
- Agile thinking – Able to adapt plans based on real-time feedback
- Influential without authority – Eliciting buy-in from clinicians, operational teams, and external partners
- High aptitude for change management – Transforming healthcare systems at scale
- Self-motivated and autonomous – Managing multiple stakeholders with minimal direction

Person Specifications
Essential Criteria
✔ Degree or equivalent experience at master’s level ✔ Affiliation with a relevant professional body (e.g., Royal College of Physicians, Royal College of Nursing) ✔ Advanced project management knowledge + experience of managing healthcare transformations ✔ Formal PRINCE2® Practitioner qualification (or equivalent evidenced experience) ✔ Impeccable interpersonal skills – Communication across diverse audiences ✔ Proven ability to analyze complex information and influence effectively ✔ Healthcare senior experience (leadership/clinical familiarity highly desirable) ✔ Service improvement background (QI, patient pathway redesign, system integration)
Desirable
🔹 Membership of Facility for Improvement or similar quality-oriented colleges 🔹 Coaching experience (especially with clinical teams) 🔹 Teaching/educational background in social science, healthcare policy, or related fields

The Neighbourhoods and Living with and Beyond Cancer team is a cornerstone of the Wessex Cancer Alliance, focused on:
- Prehabilitation (enabling patients to strengthen pre-surgery)
- Personalised follow-up (post-treatment monitoring tailored to individuals)
- Supporting transitions between hospital/community care for continuity
The broader Wessex Cancer Alliance drives regional improvement in cancer services, partnering with:
