Main duties of the job
This Is An Exciting Opportunity Within The Neighbourhoods And Living With And Beyond Cancer Team That Will Have Two Main Elements To This Programme Manager Post
The programme manager will be responsible for leading the delivery of the Personalised Stratified Follow-Up (PSFU) programme across Wessex. A key part of this role will be facilitating agreement on PSFU protocols through tumour-specific clinical groups, managing differing perspectives and enabling consensus on eligibility, stratification, monitoring and escalation approaches. They will support implementation of agreed models, ensure appropriate governance and tracking arrangements are in place, and provide oversight of delivery, risks and progress across the system. The post holder will work with clinical, operational and digital teams across multiple organisations to expand PSFU into additional tumour pathways and support consolidation of existing pathways. The programme manager will also be responsible for supporting delivery of the prehabilitation programme, working alongside the clinical advisor and wider programme team. The post holder will coordinate activity across organisations, support implementation of pathway and service changes, and enable collaboration between partners across acute, community and voluntary sector services to deliver agreed objectives.

What You’ll Do
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity to support the delivery and improvement of personalised cancer care pathways across Wessex and make a real difference to patient outcomes and experience. You will use your programme and project management expertise to lead delivery of key workstreams, working end-to-end from scoping and planning with stakeholders, facilitating agreement on key elements such as protocols and pathways, through to implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
You will be able to encourage and support partners to implement change across a complex system, working with clinical, operational and system stakeholders to manage differing perspectives and build consensus. You will liaise with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure agreed changes are implemented effectively, and that progress, risks and impact are monitored and reported through programme governance processes. Developing positive and effective relationships and building trust will be a key part of being successful in this role.
You will ensure that patients and the wider population remain at the heart of all improvement work, supporting co-design, collaboration and engagement with partners to shape and deliver pathway improvements that improve outcomes, experience and equity across the Wessex system.
What We’re Looking For
You will need to have significant experience in delivering service improvement or transformation within cancer or long-term conditions, with an understanding of Living With and Beyond Cancer and the ability to apply quality improvement and service redesign approaches to a range of projects.
You will be able to work with a high degree of autonomy and minimal direction, shaping improvement projects and ensuring goals are realised.
You will be a strong leader, with a sense of vocation and a strong value set, driven to improve cancer services for our population.
You will have a high degree of personal resilience when working with our stakeholders and be able to proficiently navigate challenging discussions and mitigate risks and issues working with our partners.
You will need to be able and happy to travel as part of this role, as working on site with our service delivery teams to research, design and implement improvements is a core part of this role. This means working across the breadth of Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The Neighbourhoods and Living With and Beyond Cancer (LWBC) Team’s main focus within the Wessex Cancer Alliance is to support prehabilitation, personalised follow-up, and improving transitions between hospital and community-based care. We aim to improve patient experience, outcomes and system sustainability through the delivery of personalised care approaches aligned to national priorities.

You will be part of the wider Wessex Cancer Alliance team, which together provides expertise and support for all facets of cancer services across stakeholder groups locally, and also works with regional and national colleagues as part of the wider cancer agenda. Our purpose is to lead and inspire innovation and improvement in cancer care for all people in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The role is full-time, 37.5 hours per week. The role is hybrid with a minimum of two on-site days per week (Southampton or Dorchester).
You will be required to attend meetings across Dorset, Hampshire & Isle of Wight to fully engage with teams, understand the pathways, and support the development of plans to implement improvements.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential criteria
Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in a health care setting. Member of relevant professional body – where appropriate. Knowledge of project management /improvement skills across a range of disciplines, with a track record of managing successful change Holds a relevant project management qualification (e.g. Prince2 Practitioner) or can demonstrate relevant equivalent knowledge Presenting and communicating to a variety of different audiences. Experience at a senior level in industry or healthcare sector. Evidence of leading and implementing change, influencing behaviour, collaborative working with others. Evidence of significant structured project management skills and experience. Previous experience in quality / service improvement environment Able to work across boundaries forming effective working relationships with a wide range of staff. A self-starter, able to work with minimal direction. Knows when to take the lead in situations and when to encourage others take lead roles. Demonstrate the ability to analyse and interpret technical, sensitive or contentious information and present this to a variety of audiences.
