Programme Officer - Doctoral Training, ROYAL ECONOMIC SOCIETY
Programme Officer: Doctoral Training
The Royal Economic Society is working in partnership with the Economic and Social Research Council to deliver a national programme of doctoral training for PhD students in economics. Through residential schools, online masterclasses and expert workshops, the programme helps early-career economists build the skills, confidence and networks needed to progress in research and beyond.
About the Role
We are seeking a Programme Officer to help coordinate and deliver this important programme during the academic year. Working closely with the Programme Director, Head of Events, and members of the Education and Training Committee, you will play a central role in ensuring the programme is well organised, professionally delivered, and engaging for students, speakers, and partner organisations.
This is a varied and hands-on role for someone who enjoys bringing people, plans, and details together. You will support the planning, promotion, and delivery of training sessions; coordinate speakers and registrations; assist with online delivery; and help manage the residential school, including the tender process, host selection, and on-site arrangements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
