At Colchester Institute, we believe in the power of education to transform lives and communities. As one of the leading providers of education and training in the region, we are proud to offer a dynamic, supportive, and forward-thinking working environment.
We are seeking a motivated and student-focused individual to join our team at the Braintree campus. Job title: Progress and Destination Tutor
37 Hours per week, Permanent.
Location: Braintree
About the role:
- Supporting students during their induction and transition into College life, working closely with curriculum staff to help learners identify their career aspirations, planned destinations, and any barriers to learning. You will play a key role in supporting the College's 42-day focus process to improve student retention and engagement.
- Providing targeted support during the early stages of the academic year for students who enrol late or display signs of disengagement, helping them remain motivated and successfully continue on their study programme.
- Monitoring and reviewing student attendance, punctuality, behaviour, and attitudes to learning, taking timely and appropriate action where necessary in line with College attendance and disciplinary procedures, with support from programme leaders and teaching staff.
- Delivering engaging weekly tutorial sessions based on cross-college themes and a centrally developed tutorial programme. Topics include progression opportunities, employability, safeguarding, prevention of radicalisation, personal safety, bullying and harassment, and British values.
- Adapting and developing Personal Development Group Tutorial resources and activities to meet the needs of different learner groups while maintaining a consistent College-wide approach.
- Using digital platforms such as Google Classroom to support the delivery of the Personal Development Group Tutorial Programme, particularly in areas such as work experience and employability skills.
- Building positive and supportive relationships with students through regular one-to-one tutorials, helping learners successfully complete all aspects of their Study Programme, including maths, English, work-related learning, and personal development requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
