Project Design Engineer - Civil
Internal applicants are welcome
Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) is a fully integrated design and build business, combining the design expertise of Mott MacDonald with the contracting experience of JN Bentley, renowned for delivering award-winning projects.
A Game-Changing Opportunity
In November 2023, MMB secured its first-ever framework agreement with South West Water, serving 1.8 million customers across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, and parts of Dorset and Somerset. This multi-million-pound AMP8 contract (2024–2029, with potential extension to 2034) marks our first foray into the South West, where we’ll bring our innovative project delivery reputation to pioneering water and wastewater projects.
We’re already on-site fast-tracking existing work, and new projects will land in 2025. This role will let you drive creative, innovative solutions—hrering how MMB delivers affordable, high-impact infrastructure.
[Project Design Engineer – Civil] is a hybrid Project Management & Design Engineering role, combining leadership through outline to detailed design, site construction, and client handover—all within a multi-disciplinary team.
Why You’ll Thrive Here
✔ Diverse & dynamic work environment: Design-build blend: you’ll overlap design, execution, and client engagement—rare in most firms. ✔ Fast-track your Chartership: supported by mentorship, training, and hands-on experience from day one. ✔ See your work built: your designs will be realised on-site—no paper-pushing. ✔ Multi-skilled collaboration: work alongside Site Managers, Quantity Surveyors, civil/electrical/mechanical designers, BIM modellers, and process specialists. ✔ Agile working: blend office, remote, and site work to suit your balance—all within a South West Water framework, meaning long-term stability and impact.
What does success look like daily? bullet A "project triangle" partner: supporting Site Managers and Quantity Surveyors to align technical, constructability, and commercial needs—for water/wastewater viability—from brief to commissioning. ✔ Deliver on time, on budget, and to quality: lead full-lifecycle design (from feasibility to sign-off) and avoid technical or contractual delays. ✔ Team leadership: coordinate specialists (+), mentor junior team members, and foster a "one-team" culture with South West Water’s project and assurance teams. ✔ Client collaboration: keep stakeholders updated with clarity and purpose—bridging gaps between technical teams and commercial goals.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
